BBC Shows on PTSD

I watched this as it aired with my wife (who has ptsd) and we were both fuming.

It was the most appauling piece of "reporting" I have ever watched. The facts, the information, the description were ALL wrong.

The program left the viewer thinking either soliders get "real" PTSD, or people who have a slight car crash, have a falling out at work, or stub their toe suffer from PTSD so they can sue other people.

It's stupid. They totally belittled it, and made it out to be another one of those "unprovable illnesses" people use in order to sue companies and governments.

It was so insulting and so badly researched.

Thanks for your comment Refresh and welcome to the forum.

I've just written a complain to the BBC regarding both programmes. They will get back to me in 10 days. I'll report back what they say. I dont usually complain about these kind of things but those programmes rattled me so much its taken me 3 days to calm down enough to write a sensible argument.

I also mentioned in my complaint the appalling waste of an opportunity. Given that our troops are currently returning from war with mental as well as physical injuries it could have been perfect timing to try and educate people about trauma.

I have not seen but will try to catch up this weekend. Personally, I have never sought to make any money out of beijng ill. So I'd like to know what they think the motivation for me being suicidal at times is. Hey ho. Anyway, the way i see it, if you have the balls to drive your car off a hillside at 50 mph and manage to incorporate a full 360 spin flying over trees into a forest then you can sit in judgement of wether that constitutes a traumatic event.

Any takers do you think?

Are people allowed to have PTSD if they are in a plain or a train crash? Theres loads of evidence of that isn't there?

So whats the difference between a car crash (especially a spectacular dukes of hazard type thing!) and something bigger crashing?

Guys, don't get angry. Some people are just nobheads.

A lot of radio stations and TV talk shows say certain things to get a response from the audience.
I remember a radio broadcaster talking about how abortion was right. A baby isn't even a human being when its not born. And its not going to know it died, children are just burdens anyway, they make woman fat, etc. This sent the public into an uproar and he got more reponse than anything. He didn't seriously believe this...he just said it for a response.
People would send in a complaint then listen to see if he would respond. Therefore, getting more listeners.
People loved to hate him!

Maybe this is it?

yeh, here in Australia 2 radio folk just got taken off the radio for basically interrogating a young woman about her sexual past... the problem is that this young woman had been raped and they subjected her to a lie detector test at the behest of her mother.

I understand how this kind of rubbish gets ratings - it appeals to the lowest common denominator, but it is repulsive.

Jagged Angel,
Well that is true. But some fights we cannot win. So the anger and hurt only serve to batter those who feel them. I know that.

It is better to let it ride. I am trying!

Dear lord this makes my skin crawl and my blood boil at the same time. But it does not take away from the fact that these things are said to cause hurt and pain and it is our job in life to build our defences against the storms.

I got a response from the BBC:

Dear Miss XXXXXX

Thanks for your e-mail regarding 'Panorama - The Trauma Industry'.

I understand you had concerns with the above programme as you believe it gave the impression that PTSD is an improvable disorder that is used and exploited by people and also contained a great deal of faulty information.

This matter was raised with the programme makers who have issued the following response:

removed link as not sure if they are allowed on here

Thanks again for taking the time to e-mail us.

BBC Complaints

problem is I followed the link and it's only about fibroaction not PTSD. so I am far from satisfied...

I got a response today too. I have been offered the chance to discuss my concerns with the Deputy Editor of the programme.
