As some of you know my wife's PTSD was caused by a combination of childhood trauma and Government Programing. Even though she has worked through the memories of the Programing trauma she still had her doubts that what she was remembering was real. That this type of thing just doesn't/didn't go on.

She just finished reading a book based on declassified Government documents that described the very programs that she was subjected to. The book reinforced everything she remembered. Including subjects being killed for talking about what happened to them and what they were put through.

Needless to say she's totally freaking out. She feels she put all our lives in danger. She is convinced that since she wrote her book exposing so much of what "they" did to her, that they will follow through on their threats to kill everyone she knows.

I don't know how to deal with something like this. Her T doesn't think that there is any threat any longer, but according to the author of this book these programs are ongoing.

Any ideas how I can help my poor wife deal with this knowledge would be really appreciated.

Either all of this is a paranoid delusion of a seriously disturbed mind... Or it's real... & WTF are you doing sitting around posting on the Internet and speaking at conferences and writing books? Change your names, leave the country, & live out your lives in peace & obscurity never mentioning groups of people you believe would kill you if you mention them, ever again.

Obscurity is harder than it looks to achieve, so it should keep you quite busy for a few years while you iron out the kinks.

Seriously.

Either she's going for anonymity or she's going for writing books, both don't work, pick one.

& Feels hot and isn't. I get she's freaking out, but with most freakouts of whatever type? Unless you're directly, physically, present moment, in danger, there's work arounds & things aren't so unsolvable as they appear.

& 'ongoing'. Lot of stuff is 'ongoing'. That doesn't mean it involves her. Or anybody else related. Shit, crap weather is 'ongoing'. Doesn't mean it's raining where one is.

Like you said...

That this type of thing just doesn't/didn't go on.

Can you honestly believe that there is a government brainwashing program, and subsequently, a conspiracy to kill your family?

She just finished reading a book based on declassified Government documents that described the very programs that she was subjected to. The book reinforced everything she remembered. Including subjects being killed for talking about what happened to them and what they were put through.

It all sounds pretty far fetched, and just because somebody writes a book, it doesn't mean they are telling the truth or know what they are talking about. If the author allegedly has "proof" from declassified documents, I'd go take a gander at the documents myself. Primary sources, or it's bullshit, in my opinion. Any decent secondary source is going to cite it's primary source. There is a Freedom of Information Act...

I held onto the threat my attacker made to me for a very, very long time.

When I finally told someone whet happened to me, I became convinced that their life was in danger.

I'm normally a pretty rational person, even with the PTSD. But I truly believed that he was going to find me, follow me to therapy, and kill my therapist and his family. That he would then find my sister and kill her.

The fear was a real feeling; the possibility of those things happening was not.

Paranoia happens. Navigate it, but don't play into it.

To address the original question of 'any way how to help'... if it's genuine trauma? Trauma recovery programs.

Seriously, the same thing (with hundred different variants, we're different people, what works for Jane won't work for Joe and will work way faster for Mary!) applies. One's trauma & recovery doesn't differ so much what exactly it was from. Parts may be specific. Whole of it? Nope.

Aka; assuming this is a thing: She probably doesn't need some super specific program to help her deal with things. But solid grounding skills & coping strategies & safe environs & learning to spot predators & increase self worth & world view to not run into toxic long term situations in the first place. Eventually if so, legal & medical help with concrete people & events. Possibly common support groups & human rights advocacy. But all of that are small steps, & all of that are steps that may come useful in trauma treatment as is.... don't look at this as 'shock, conspiracy!!!'. That lens isn't helpful.

@Sweetpea76
It all sounds pretty far fetched,
Nice little bit of invalidation/gaslighting there.

Naivety on your part, does not mean that a bad thing either does not happen or cannot happen.

Please think very carefully about what you have written. Would you have written that in reply to the supporter of a rape, kidnap or child abuse survivor? surely nice old father Murphy, our parish priest would never do something like that...

Milo's Papa,
Sorry or what your wife endured, and the worries that you are both now experiencing.

Judith Herman, in "Trauma and Recovery" is very specific, that the first stage upon which all other stages of recovery are based is establishing safety and self care.

Within that, we need to take stock of what are actual threats, and what is the drasticizing of our past experiences and flashbacks to the feelings of helplessness aloneness as a child against seemingly omnipotent adult world, that is part and parcel of PTSD.

Herman herself had direct experiences of that, as her family was subject to the McCarthyite purges.

Do gangs murder people who stand in the way of their plunder, or spill their sordid little secrets, or who even just know something sensitive?

Hell yes! all of the fecking time. With the biggest gang in an area and hence the most capable of violence (they usually use the name "government"), the death is usually plausibly deniable, but with enough clues pour encourage les autres.

There is also the ancient Greek adage, that "those whom the gods would destroy, they first make [people think of as] mad". Sorry that you have just had an experience of that, here of all places.

British researcher Richard Bentall's recent work on the life and trauma histories of patients diagnosed as psychotically paranoid, shows, as did the work of Janet and Freud in the 1890s with "hysterical" female patients, backgrounds of incredibly unsafe environments.

This of course raises the side question of why, even here on this forum, the suggestion of psychosis renders someone's account invalid, the ravings of a fevered mind. cui bono?

Release of documents does suggest that the program is less sensitive than it once was, the release may only be partial. Admission of part of the story might fool some people that full disclosure has been made, while more sensitive information remains hidden from us children.

for an example of partial release, watch the BBC "Timewatch" documentaries from the early 1990s about "Operation Gladio" in Europe. they're up on youtube, still. the Author of the documentaries, Alan Francovich was an interesting guyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Francovich

"Gladio" was the codename for a secret army in Europe, which came to public attention in around 1990 and was investigated and reports published by several European governments. Its exploits included pretty much all of the supposedly "far left" terror attacks in Europe and the kidnap and murder of a former prime minister of Italy. to find coverage of bombing campaigns in Britain and Ireland, and British state collusion (arguably from the same play book and at the same time as "Gladio") one would have to go to the Republic of Ireland.

There are also ridiculous theories, deliberately put about, in order to allow people with genuine information to be dismissed as, yes, as nutters.

There is the matter of time. What your wife experienced, may be largely supersceded by newer techniques, knowledge and research, and many of the people at who's hands she suffered, are probably no longer in a position to hurt others, or at least not so easily as perhaps they could back then.

I have only limited knowledge of the accounts of political refugees, but from what I do know, if your wife is feeling seriously unsafe herself, get her to safety.

make it look like your going on a package holiday, return flights, sun cream, appropriate luggage for the week or fortnight list of addresses for holiday postcards...

no obvious signs of selling up.

Incidentally, the united state does have something of an invisible Berlin Wall, few banks outside of the united state will give an American a bank account, it's just too complicated and too risky for them.

The price of going into exile is often high, and the means are often "illegal" and come with the serious risk of being robbed or worse on the way, for example the ancestors of the small Jewish community in Dublin, believed they'd arrived safely in America, because that's what they'd paid the people traffickers of their day for, as they fled from the tzar's pogroms. Only you and your wife can decide if the risks and costs are worth it to you.

Traditionally, the Republic of Ireland and Spain were destinations for political refugees from Britain, as until recently, neither had an extradition treaty with Britain, and both places were inhospitable to British murder gangs ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo_Gang ). If you need to, you'll work out the possible options for yourselves.

@Anarchy the OP Stated that his wife doubted her recovered memories, and they were validated by a book she read. Wouldn't it be prudent to check the sources of the book?

Or is it more healthy to run with the idea the government is going to kill you and your family?

the OP Stated that his wife doubted her recovered memories,
There are very few people who have traumatic memories who don't have serious doubts about them, due to their fragmentary nature.

The interesting bit, and I can't remember off hand whether this was cited in van der Kolk's "the body keeps the score" or Fisher's "Neurofeedback in the treatment of developmental trauma" is that interviews thirty years apart of former ivy league students who had fought in WWii, showed no change at all in the trauma memories of the ones with PTSD, whereas the narrative memories of those without PTSD were subject to change between the interviews. The traumatic memories were, on that evidence, more reliable than the non traumatic ones.

Wouldn't it be prudent to check the sources of the book?
It depends what the sources are, and where they are held. If the poor woman is already terrified for her own life and the lives of those close to her, booking into the archive of the very institution which traumatized her, is not going to be a good idea.

Or is it more healthy to run with the idea the government is going to kill you and your family?
Or persons within that institution?

You tell me.

Regardless of whether you believe government to be either good, a necessary evil, or simply an evil, there is very good documentary evidence showing that in the twentieth century alone, governments murdered at the very lowest estimate 220,000,000 people, outside of war (the late prof Rudy Rummel at university of Hawaii compiled the figures)

just using the figure from the twentieth century, and comparing it to any estimate of total private sector homicide throughout human history, and yes, on the basis of probability, you are at far greater risk of being killed by a government than a private individual or private sector gang, or in a war.

Does this apply to the various levels of government in the united state? To answer that, you don't have to search very far or scratch very deep to find figures in influential positions, openly advocating among other things, summary execution and total war at home:
Dead Link Removed
Or those who have held influential position

https://reason.com/blog/2015/07/21/edward-snowden-should-be-publicly-hanged
or those seeking influential positions, espousing the idea for populist reasons
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/01/donald-trump-edward-snowden-execution_n_3530162.html

And what ultimately matters, is that @Milo's papa 's wife knows better than anyone else, what she is dealing with.

my personal opinion; bureaucratic harassment of family is much more likely, tax audits, traffic stops with drugs planted, strip searches, destructive home searches, with floors and walls ripped out etc.

Authors who do upset the establishment, on past performance for example the late Gary Webb, formerly of the San Jose Mercury News, can expect character assassination and ridiculing from establishment news outlets, followed by being tragically suicided, in Webb's case, shot in the head - twice...

One thing I forgot to add previously

In our childish flashback fears of an omnipotent and omniscient adult world, we forget that it is neither.

Who was the cartoon character who loved to intimidate with his huge shadow, when he was only 2 inches tall and standing in front of a flashlight?

Governments are inefficient and full of people who are lazy and at or beyond their level of incompetence.

You could be on the metaphorical leviathan's arse and biting it for all you are worth. It may not even notice.

and even if it does notice, it may be too inefficient or have other priorities and distracting itches to scratch first.

Not least amongst those inefficiencies, is the greed of corrupt cops. Why waste time harassing an author, when there are motorists and businessmen to shake down for a bribe, not to mention the people who operate in the shady markets for recreational pharmaceuticals and commercial sex. The Knapp report into corruption in the NYPD in the 70s, found that a "sizeable majority of police engaged in corruption"
