Not wanting to talk about childhood issues.... Looks and smells like avoidance to me!!! Or did I read that wrong and you will look for a new T?

Good questions. It is minor in that I just want to work on reducing my negative self talk. I have a great marriage and great relationships with my kids. I have wonderful friends and I have pretty healthy relationships. I have one sister that gets on my nerves but I would do anything for her and she would do anything for me. No anxiety, no mood problems. So yeah, trying to work on my self talk seems minor.

My childhood was pretty hard. It wasn't horrible. I was loved and cared for by my mom and my dad loved me (in his own way). But I am not interested in another go around of "how did that make you feel?" and "What would you say to your father if he was in front of you today?". At some point in trauma you have to accept that bad things happened to you and concentrate on the present. I have been doing that successfully for 10 years. All I want is some suggestions on how I can deal reduce my negative self talk.

Does that make sense? Plus who wants to pay $180 an hour to talk about things that have already been discussed to death.

Your T may be digging at your childhood experiences because those experiences are potentially the cause of your negative self-talk. Unpacking those experiences may help to change the negative self-talk.

But there are other therapeutic approaches that you might find work for you better. If you have a great life, and you feel like you’ve dealt with your childhood experiences? I can totally understand why you’re a little worried that your T is turning your issue with ‘negative self-talk’ into full-blown psychopathology, and creating issues where there aren’t any.

You may find more generalised CBT, DBT or ACT approaches more helpful.
