Cheque’s haven’t been cashed in 6 weeks

Yep. Your ability to manage money is not her responsibility unless a certain arrangement has been made between you two. If you’ve written a cheque for the amount and handed it to her, it’s your responsibility to keep it in the bank until she withdraws it. You getting upset over when is your own problem. She has no obligation to tell you when she can make it to the bank. That’s her business.

Hope you figure out something that works for you in the future!

I deal with therapists the same way I deal with drug dealers... cash only for relief of my problems :P

Now seriously, if you're that bothered by this, I think you should heed everyone's advice and pay cash or e-transfer from now on. Saves a whole lot of trouble.

Huh?

Did you miss that class in high school where we all learned how to write checks? That the money is "gone" when you write the check, NOT when it's cashed?

If you balanced your checkbook on an ongoing basis (which in reality is 100% your responsibility as a checking account holder), this wouldn't be an issue.

I suggest educating yourself on how a checking account works instead of throwing a fit and blaming your therapist for your financial ignorance.

But in all honesty, I'd bet anything that you have other issues with your Therapist and this is just an "easy" way to get mad at her as it's not trauma related.

Nowhere did the OP say that they couldn't manage their money, or that they're double spending the money allocated to those cheques. They did say that when they are finally cashed it's going to be a ''big hit'', aka a large amount of money, all at once. The OP was expecting several payments spread out over x period of time, and now it's going to happen both late, and all at once. Shocker, but that may cause some emotions or questions for some people. Honestly, I :poop: myself every time I pay a large amount of money for anything, and I'm so tight with money I've had my budget done for the rest of the year since September. It's the hit of seeing that sudden heart-stopping drop in the balance of your account, even though you know it's coming (OMG where did that money go??? ok, it went to xyz as planned... but FML that's a lot of money!!!) seriously, that shit is scary.

[me checking my account after a large anything:
].

There's nothing wrong, unusual, silly, financially irresponsible, worthy of judgement, etc about questioning why someone is holding onto multiple cheques for 6 weeks (and still counting). Just because they can legally hold onto them for x months, doesn't mean you can't address the delay. Just the opposite, anything that is/isn't happening with your financial accounts on time or as expected, should be questioned, before things get out of hand. 6 weeks & 4 un-cashed cheques, is getting out of hand (Gail Vaz Oxlade would definitely have strong words about this). The fact that this situation is out of character for the T, it's been addressed at a session, the T has acknowledged that it is an issue, and it still isn't resolved (cheques finally cashed).... means this issue needs more attention, not less.

Or, what you could do is cancel ALL of the checks and go in with the cash immediately and get a receipt? :)

No drama.

I do get your point @gealach - I had a business hold a transaction on a debit card for TWO YEARS! When it hit - oh my... shock and dismay!

That wasn't legal btw but they got their money. I got over it but there was the heart in the mouth experience when going grocery shopping that day. :wtf:

Because your bank account looks like you have a million dollars in it but in reality it only has 34 cents?
Sounds like a personal problem lol. I do that everyday when my credit card has “pending transactions”. The money has yet to be posted, but I no longer have access to the full amount of my credit limit bc I knowingly charged it. Then, the amnt on my chequing(debit) accnt looks like I have a lot, but in reality I only have .34 because I need the rest to make a payment on the credit card once it all has posted.

Not my bank’s fault, the business’ where I spent my cash..no one’s. I spent it, I owe it.

Oh but isn't it nice to see lots of moneeee in your bank account and pretend it really is all there?! :)

No, because that’s when errors in spending occur and you start thinking “hmm. I could just *not* pay that bill and keep all of this for me!”

I actually just dumped a buttload of cash on service that I need, and I just got paid yesterday. Don’t fool yourself thinking you have $$. It’s never yours. You are just holding it for someone else

This has never been about not being able to afford therapy, balancing my checkbook or the education I should be receiving because of my “financial ignorance”. ? I never ever stated I could not afford or was freaked out about the money coming or going out of my account. At the end of the day she can hang onto my cheques for 6 months and I can assure you if this was normal practice for most therapists a lot more people would be questioning the practice. In my business my clients start screaming if I don’t invoice them on a regular basis. I think this is no different. At the end of the day it’s not about the money, it’s how she’s conducting business that I’m questioning.
