The part that worries me is that more and more of today's youth are starting to emulate the bad guys in movies and television shows. When I was young, we always tried to emulate the good guys and often complained about being the bad guys, even though they were necessary for someone to be the good guy. This kind of reminds me of what LaVey said in his book, The Devils Notebook.
No, this individual did not have any military experience, from what I can tell. He was a PhD student, studying neuroscience, which gave him a great deal of insight into psychology and our fears. He was simply coping the stuff that he saw on film and television, and sorting through what would work and would not work.
I was rather shocked at the ages of the individuals sent to the hospital. Children at a midnight premiere? But then, I'm from a time when midnight movies were mostly for us party animals. Movies like Pink Flamingos and The Rocky Horror Picture Show come to mind right off.
Unfortunately, the theater where I live was recently robbed in a manner similar to this, except that no one was injured. Of course, this robbery was much earlier in the afternoon, as where I live few people are out that late after sunset. If they are, they are not watching a movie.
Sadly, even after 9/11, we do not take security very seriously, unless we are trauma survivors. The police are pathetically undertrained to handle such situations, as a rule. Those few places that do have armed security are simply not adequate to provide effective deterrence to people who have hostile inclinations. I guess it really should come as no surprise that one of the first things that they did was to try and connected to an external terrorist source. It's the government's way of trying to say that you are not paranoid if you are worried about security because we have police protecting you. It's kind of like a double strike against those of us with PTSD who are often compelled to consider personal security as well as that of our loved ones.
I have little doubt that there will be traumatic effects from this idiotic incident. While the shooting itself may not cause very many, the way that it is handled is likely to cause more problems. At least, this has been my experience when dealing with trauma and those who are unable to communicate with the victims effectively.
My condolences to all of the victims. Unfortunately, I cannot help but feel that someone will try to top this horror with one of their own.
