Connecting With The Natural World

Hello there

Tonight is the peak of the Geminid meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere. I love looking at the stars.

Yesterday night the sky was very clear and as my partner and I drove home from our day out, he asked if I would like him to stop so that we could look at the stars. So we stopped in the middle of the countryside and parked by the edge of a field. We stood looking up at a dark sky, littered with thousands of silvery speckles. It was beautiful.

There is something about me being outside and just observing the majesty of the natural world. Whether it's wildlife and its natural behaviour, the sound of leaves on the tress, the sparkle of the stars or the ferocious storms battering our coast line. I get so much from these experiences. I reconnect, ground, become inspired.

I am going to get in the car shortly and drive out to somewhere without light pollution and watch the meteor shower. I'm sad my boyfriend isn't around to share it with me, but I feel well enough to do this alone today.

I wonder if any of you feel like this with the natural world?

Hi Nicky

I love the starlight, it is wonderful. I usually see them early mornings while I am waiting for the bus to go to work at 6.20 am, them plus the moon.

When it's cold and frosty, with one solitary bird chirping in the tree by the bus stop, absolutely wonderful.

Will have a quick look for the meteor shower before I go to bed, is there a specific time it is due or is it most of the night. I am in West Yorkshire, so as you say it is the northern hemisphere I wondered if we would get a good sighting of it.

The stars in the summer sky - out in the country, nothing but the stars, the occassional loon calling in the distance, crickets chirping and the soft occassional rustling of the leaves in the trees.

Outdoors, middle of winter - heavy snow weighing down the pine boughs, a bluejay hopping across the surface of the powder nipping at seeds, inhaling deeply the cold, crisp air in through your nostrils and lungs and watching your breath float away from you, ghost-like, rising in the air toward the sky as you exhale.

There is nothing I find more healing than reconnecting with nature.

Beautiful Poetry

Your post was like a poem from one of my many poetry books Medic. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings on this. I can appreciate the magic of those experiences, and could almost feel them as I read your post.

Hey. Thanks for the notification about the meteor shower. I'll have to drive out to one of my places in the middle of nowhere, away from the city lights.

It's advice I've been offering for years. Get out of the house. Go look at the sky.

I love the meteor showers too. I usually take my boys up into a State Park just outside of town and we will drive up to one of the higher spots and park. Then lay on either the ground or a picnic table and watch the stars. It's totally relaxing!

I don't think that's going to happen tonight though! We've gotten about 6 inches of new snow and it's currently -13 F. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

For me, it is always the sky.

When I lived in the country and near the sea, I just fell in love with the all the different skies, clear, stormy, starry... I could just gaze for hours doing nothing.

I barely catch a glimpse of a starry night anymore but just to drive somewhere and soak it all up would be just heaven.

I would have love to have seen the shower. I love mother nature and after turning pagan I find worshiping it so much easier. It upsets me to see people throwing litter and distroying our planet. They have no respect for where they come from.

I will have to keep a close eye on things like this so I can go drive and watch them

I love to watch sunsets and to stargaze. And where I live, I occasionally catch sight of the aurora borealis. It's fascinating to watch the colors dance in the sky.

My favorite place to be is in the mountains. The sight and sound of a water flowing down a creek, bouncing over the rocks is something I could enjoy for hours.

And I'm always up for a good thunderstorm!!!

That all sounds wondrous MJ. The sound of water can be soothing and calming. I'm visualising that now.

I used to live in the UK, down on Exmoor, by the Bristol Channel. It was incredible, and I remember the sky seemed so CLEAR and close. The meteor shower must have been awesome over the UK- I envy you all so much!

We live in the middle of the woods, with a wild, rushing creek not far from the bedroom window. Nothing is more peaceful or REAL or grounding than listening to that water and the sounds of the woods at night. It drowns out the 'bad' so often for me. It also is SUCH a 'reward' to come back to after having to be OUT and around crowds of people. You can breathe, out here.
