I think the point that really got missed and took the thread off topic was that all @EveHarrington pointed out was this therapist offered a service that people willingly hired him for. They came in hopes to make themselves straight. Whether I agree or not, this therapist at the time thought that being homosexual was/is a social issue not a DNA/born this way kind of thing. That doesn't make the therapist OR the people seeking heterosexuality bad, inhumane, or deserving of being beaten by a bat.

Unenlightened? Yes, but just as we are all on a journey, so are they.

Tolerance equals being able to see and hear others and accept that they are in a different spot in their journey in life but hopefully on their way to enlightenment. Threatening someone with a baseball bat perhaps means you gotta do some more work. Hate = Hate no matter who, what, when, and why.

I have my own experience with this on many levels. Please don't assume that most of us here aren't touched by, either ourselves, or someone in our family being gay. I haven't read anything here that makes me feel like we all aren't on the same team or that anyone believes conversion therapy is acceptable. It's not. Nor is it acceptable that people go seek it out as an answer. Equally, every time someone perceives it is ok to threaten violence against those who believe differently, you perpetuate the very thing they preach...hate.

This isn't true.
The Canadian province of Alberta has both a public and private health care providers.
If you have more money than patience, you can opt to foot the bill and get the care you need sooner than through the public Alberta healthcare system.
You can even use both at the same time if you wish to supplement your public care with private care.

On The Big Questions - a regular UK Sunday morning TV debating programme - they featured a young gay man this morning who had put himself through Conversion Therapy at the age of 16, when he could not cope with his feeling towards men. As a Nigerian, living in Nigeria, he later came out publicly on TV. A very brave man who was very eloquent in describing his hopes that the Therapy would cure him. Obviously it didn't . In all parts of Nigeria homosexuality is illegal - in some areas still punishable by the death penalty. One can understand how gay people would clutch at straws to save themselves, and it makes sense that he is now in the UK.

I am a bit late to this conversation but in the lovely state of Utah, conversion therapy is done all the time against the wills of minors and many times against the will of the parents.

Utah has a law that allows for conversion therapy to be done on inpatient minors against the will of both the minor and thier parents if Dr.s feel that the child's sexuality is the source for their self harm or suicidal behavior. When you live in an area dominated by the LDS church, your risk of those behaviors automatically increase as it is.

Parents who don't want it done can appeal, but if 5 good standing members of the church, ahem, I mean Dr.s agree, then nothing the parents can do.
