Could Fizzy Drinks Contribute to PTSD Symptoms?

It is over 2 years since posted on here, but a possible light bulb moment, (Or sore foot, from bottle falling out of fridge moment) had me look it up and add to it today.

Hubby has been on a slide again for the last 2 weeks, outside stressor's put aside this has been the same as before with neither of us understanding why he has struggled to get back up from those stressor's.

Until the fridge and foot incident this morning, and bingo the possibility of what it could be hit me.

2 weeks ago I bought some syrups for our Soda Stream, 4 of them. I have not used it for a long time, as I could not find an outlet for them, and the web site prices were crazy.

Hubby has been drinking the coke one for the last 2 weeks, and after reading the contents on it this morning, it clicked.

It does not contain Aspartame, but does contain Acesulfame Potassium, another of the chemical artificial sweeteners.

So I Googled it and checked it out, and yes it is possible that this could be an issue for him as the Aspertame may have been too.

He has been slowly getting more and more like he was when he was drinking anything with Aspartame in it. Tired, listless, no motivation, not hungry, and beginning to feel sorry for himself again.

No more soda stream drinks for him now, and it is back to the tried and tested soft drinks that do not contain any kind of artificial sweetners like this at all.

It may not be this at all, and it may just be him struggling to come to terms with what has been going on, but we are not taking the chance by him keeping drinking it.

Just In case.

I too have problems with drinking too much squash etc. I think most of mine come from it creating sugar highs & lows.
I also avoid foods or drinks with E211 in, that gives me headaches & increases anxiety.

I would eliminate all the fruits and pop, whether or not it is diet pop or regular. Coffee is bad too (way to acid forming). The suger in fruits is acid forming.
One thing to try is a squeezed lemon in a cup of green tea (caffenated is fine)..See how he feels ten mins later.

This is an interesting thread. I agree on the caffiene possibly making it worse, its why I tend to stay away from larger amounts. There is one particular drink that I can't drink because it makes my symptoms flare up out of nowhere. That drink is Squirt, and any of the imitation brands of it. I love the taste and sting of it, but I just can't drink it without experiencing my chest anxiety issues, along with tingling of the hands and face. Of course it could have been related to certain medications I was on that warn about the consumption of grapefruit, now there is no grapefruit in Squirt. But maybe there is some enzymatic similiarities going on there.

Great to advice!! My best friend is diabetic, and stopped drinking diet coke and using artificial sweeteners a very long time ago, and noticed a huge change! I heard somewhere that sugar 'feeds' cancers...hmmmm makes me wonder! Cancer is SO widespread, and common these days.

I rarely do fizzy drinks, as it aggravates my Irritable Bowel, along with caffeine, sugar, and dairy. Yep, it's hard to knock all those things out, if you don't eat or drink!!:roflmao: It's the one 'addiction' you can't totally quit. It's NOT fair! Oh yes, life ISN"T fair! But, with a sense of humor, everyone won't suffer! I have learned to LOVE water, nothing like a big tall glass with crushed ice!

Switching to water only, one can lose 20 or so in a couple months!:whistling:

Yeah geez, it really makes me think about how addicting it is to have a soda whenever you want. I have on a couple occasions gone to fruit juices, but even those contain quite a lot of sugars that are added to the drink. Actually one of my favorite things to drink is ice water. On a hot day after working, I'll take some cold water over anything else any day.
