Country I Should Move To

I'm presently looking for a job, and I'm considering living away from the U.S. for a few years. I don't mind the cold, but I do prefer urban environments. Other than English I can speak little bit of Spanish, though I don't believe it's enough to get by.

So where should I go and why? Right now I'm mostly drawn to the UK.

Of places I've been that count as the UK I liked Scotland and Gibraltar the most. Ireland is also nice - I loved Galway.

Can you speak the language? It's that accent you have to fake. And you have to learn words like 'boot' and 'bonnet' and 'randy' is not a first name.

Well, as a vagabond you go where you please, but I don't think that leaving to go overseas is a very wise decision.

The world is in turmoil and IMHO about to blow up due to the political and financial crap. Everybody is fighting their neighbor over there and running around blowing up themselves and others.

Of course, I am a big wimp so you can't use my judgement. But the thought of going over there scares the hell outa me

No 2quilt, I don't speak much British. I know a few words like tele, loo, and lorry. And I know color is spelled colour, but I'll probably need to take a few British Lessons

Hi upstream, I was wondering if you wanted to leave because your running from something? If so, every where you go there you are!

Hope all is going well for you.

Peace
Tammy

If you really aren't set on where you want to go and are limited only by the language, you might want to consider Canada. I do know that you need to have a sponsor there before you can seek full-time and year-round employment and a work visa. It's not as easy as you might think. I considered going to Canada, buying a little place and retiring there. I could, but if I stayed there longer than 6 months in each of three consecutive years, would have to go through their immigration process just like everyone else. You have to admit their national health care and lack of crime is something to be envied.

I agree with Seeking Nirvana. Assess why it is you feel you need to go to another country to work. Some tihings that you think you are leaving behind will sneak into your pocket and go with you.

Grama-Herc, I don't think it would be fair to say the UK is any more dangerous than the U.S.

I've lived all over the place and really enjoyed the experience. Upstream, I hope you find a place that you can have a positive adventure. It can be really empowering to build a new life somewhere from scratch.

Yeah I gotta say I don't understand English myself. I have a hell of a time watching Harry Potter movies. I just miss so much I can barely decipher what's going on!

I'm sorry that you struggle with the 'English' language lol!
If you ever need any translations, just give me a shout!

I don't believe that we have any more financial and political crap than anywhere else in the world. Every place seems to have their problems -right?

Just wondered if Tammy has a point - are you trying to run from something?

Take care

Oh wow, I lost track of this thread. Thank you for your replies.

I've only been outside of the US twice, once to an Island in the Caribean and once when I walked accross the border into Mexico. I wanted to travel abroad in college, but couldn't afford it. My friends went to places like Spain and Australia and came back with great stories.

I never got to go like they did, but I still want to travel and have those experiences. It's not that I'm running away from something so much as it's "I'm still young and the clock is ticking..."

well depends on where you want to go, despite the aforementioned opinion that we are all mad and blowing each other up and stuff:wink: most of europes easy to get around and you can get by with american english as long as you remember pants means underwear to the rest of the world, one thing to think on though is you may get a bit of flak over iraq but dont let that put you off travelling, irelands a nice place to visit, or you could go the other way hop out to the west coast and head to hawaii, then if your feeling brave could head north to midway to look at the birds or could head to japan then down through new zealand to australia, the worlds open for travel.
