Hi everyone,

I'm feeling like I'm in a mental fog as I type this.

I've been experiencing a lot of difficulty concentrating on my studies. I feel like I'm in a mental fog throughout the day. It comes and goes, mostly when I study. I've been experiencing PTSD and depressive symptoms since I was a child from being abused. A recent event caused new symptoms of PTSD. After I was abused I felt the same and I fell behind academically in my math and science courses. Now I'm in college and usually I'm focused, but I just feel so disconnected from my mind when I read or study. It takes me 30 minutes to write 5 sentences sometimes. When I speak I feel like I don't make sense, even if I know I sound coherent. I feel like my mind is not processing thoughts the way it use to. Some days are okay and I can focus, but other days it can be challenging to have conversations or write anything at all. I'm here to talk to anyone, student or non-student. I think this forum will be helpful.

Welcome to the community. Nothing you state is unusual. If you think about the brain as a diamond, and entry and goal. Both routes go via another part of the brain, one is fast, one is slow. With PTSD... you endup on the slow route. That is an extremely simple statement of a complex process, but that is what happens in our brains until we heal trauma so it no longer clouds us, thus allowing us back to the fast lane of our brain.

Welcome to the Forum! You are in a great place to vent, share, and learn! I hope your symptoms get better...I've realized it's somewhat like learning to 'manage' our symptoms. Don't be hard on yourself...do the best you can...knowing you will have good days, and not so good days. Live one day at a time, and sometimes, one hour at a time...or less!

I hope to see you around! You can learn a LOT here!

@ccks Welcome to the forum!

The way PTSD affects a person's ability to concentrate and cognition can vary from person to person, but it seems to increase when things get stressful. For myself, I found that reading for pleasure really helped me to minimize these symptoms. It took a while, but the more I read the better it got.

I hope you find the information and support here helpful.

Hi, I can understand how difficult it can be to focus on something, when you are stuck in bad places of your past... I am a university student too and there are moments when things seem to ovrwhelm me. You are not alone in that.

Take care and don't be too hard on yourself. Keep in mind you matter; you are more important than your grades. More important than anything you are trying to achieve :)
