Wow, that sounds like a horrendous history, and (as you are well aware) it makes recovery and therapy more difficult.

My current therapist is someone I've been seeing for 13 years now. There's stuff I didn't feel able to trust him with until 6 months ago. I got a lot of benefits from the 12.5 years leading up to that point. Trust (including the trust involved in disclosing things) at your own pace. Don't think of it as all-or-nothing, trust as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable trusting. (You may decide to take a risk, but make a conscious decision that you're comfortable with, if you take a risk.)

Trust me on that one ;)

I hate the " what gave you ptsd" question. I will never answer it. Well, I will in time I guess but I won't be for a while. That said I'm sorry that you are going through what you are and I pray you get the help that you need.

Sorry. That question just really really bothers me. I guess because I'm not ready to really answer it myself.

It can be a hard question @missy meier bit for the reasons @joeylittle gave, it's an important on on this forum. People come here looking for support and there's a lot of very good stuff here for PTSD but the same advice might be really inappropriate for other medical issues. And people come saying they have PTSD having self diagnosed when there's no qualifying trauma - again leading to potentially unhelpful and possibly unsafe advice. So, someone will usually the question which people are free to answer or not.

Welcome to the forum @aut555 i hope you find the people and support here helpful.

To give an example of someone with PTSD has anxiety attacks as part of the disorder I might help them see it as their body having a normal response to threat - help with grounding and self soothing but reassure them that their body is reacting to an old, real, threat that still feels current. For general anxiety that's the worst advice to give because it increases the persons sense of not feeling safe when actually they are, it's much more helpful for them to look at their thought processes etc. A very basic example because I'm in a hurry but it's important not to assume PTSD without a clear diagnosis.
