Disgusted By Sounds

Wow, it's good to know I'm not alone in this! Thank you to everyone who replied, and @Anarchy, you are right, I do appreciate gallows humor ))) I think I am just super hypervigilante at work because of the environment. I sit in a small office but right in front of the door, with my back to it .... which as you all can guess, is torment throughout the day as dozens of people come in and out. Each and every time the door opens I get triggered. It's also a very loud, chaotic environment, with the TV blaring (because we have to watch the parliament's sessions each day), people loudly talking on the phone, etc. I wish I could work from home but it's not an option. So I may just get myself a stress ball or something. So far I've been dealing with this issue by just leaving the office to smoke every 15 minutes.

I am so disturbed by the sounds of co-workers eating in my office that i am considering quitting. I don...

I also have this issue, someone eating ice or flicking their finger nails drives me insane. Or eating with their mouth open especially when its something crunchy like chips also when someone smacks as they chew. I think part of mine comes from my childhood my parents were both heavy drinkers and my mom would rattle the ice in her glass and then chew it as she sat flicking her finger nails it drove me nuts then and if someone does it today it drives even more crazy I literally will get up and walk out of a room, the other thing is yelling I can't deal with someone yelling again due to my growing up in a alcoholic home. They would get drunk and yell at each other and sometimes fight physically when I was young the first physical fight I remember I was 3 years old. The last physical fight was when I was 16 and it was just a push but it still affected me the same as it did when I was very young,

Hello everyone.

I can identify the malady which you are suffering from...it is called MISOPHONIA.

Misophonia is a recently described phenomenon in which the sufferers hate and have VERY strong emotional responses to specific sounds.

There are many triggers, common ones include chewing, swallowing, slurping, sighing, sniffing, crunching, chewing gum, and many many more.

Misophonia, literally "hatred of sound", is a rarely diagnosed disorder, commonly thought to be of neurological origin, in which negative emotions (anger, flight, hatred, disgust) are triggered by specific sounds.

Support forums are springing up to help those who have suffered so long in silence.

I tried for 30 min to link to help for those who need it but I amnot allowed to hyperlink so you'll have to look those site up yourselves...sry
