It seems like "Borderline Personality Disorder" is the current "worst possible thing you can have."
I like the way my T describes all this. For example, instead of flat out telling me I have ADHD, he says, "ADHD is nothing more than an array of characteristics that everyone has some of. Some people have more, some people have less. I think you have noticeably more than most people."
This is true of everything, I think. In fact, I'd go so far as to say there IS not such "thing" as any of this stuff. All these "mental disorders" are an array of characteristics that humans experience to a greater or lesser extent. If it gets enough "greater" (or, I suppose, "lesser" too, in some cases) then it becomes a "problem" and they give it a name. This stuff isn't "diseases" in the sense that measles or the flu are diseases.
So, @J_trustno1 , even if you DO meet the criteria for BPD, it's nothing but a "thing". You are still the same person. The only purpose of the label ought to be as a way of bookkeeping to make it easier to understand what you're dealing with. And, I have no idea if you meet the criteria or not. BPD is associated with some of the same early background characteristics that lead to some versions of PTSD, the way I understand it. Poor parenting, attachment issues, etc. Not necessarily cause & effect, but there are correlations. So maybe, by having a particular kind of childhood, you end up lacking specific skills and tend to react in certain characteristic ways. A bit more of one reaction and you meet the criteria for BPD. A bit more of another, PTSD, etc on to all the possible permutations.
So, what do YOU think about your change in feelings about cats? Does it make sense to you? Do you have cats of you own? How do you feel about them?
