Hello,

This is actually for my boyfriend. He is suffering from an addiction problem to alcohol and other things. He has been in rehabs throughout his childhood and none of it has ever helped. The only thing that helped him get his life straight was spending 10 years in prison. He recently got out a year and a half ago. Shortly after getting out he went back to his addictions. He has never told anyone or gotten help for his ptsd so I believe he uses these addictions to mask his problems. He does not know how to get help for ptsd because he does not have any insurance. They offer programs like the salvation army for people who have addictions and are unable to pay for the help, but I don't know of any programs like that for ptsd.

I didn't have insurance at first either. If you are in the US, I think all states have a Mental Health branch of Human Services and can cater to the needs of peoples with low income. They can help you find a therapist also, finding care with a psychiatrist what will work with the sliding scale payments might be harder. Establishing care with a doctor might be a good idea if that hasn't already been done.

I only had to pay 10$ a visit for my therapist under a low income.
Of course Human services dept. can also steer you in the right direction for substance abuse issues. It takes a little bit of time to set everything up, but its well worth it. I personally passed on the drug use therapy but I no longer use, but being that it is in my past if it does become an issue I know right where to go.

You are also not stuck with the therapist if you don't jive with them, you can always go back and choose another one from the list, they will give you a certain amount of free visits probably.

Therapy for PTSD and talking to somebody about drug use are two different things probably so its likely that he will be prompted to meet with more than one person on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

I agree with Gamereign, you can usually find them in any city even with the cut backs, Mental Health Resource Centers or try looking NAMI up in your area online, they might be able to help you find the help you are looking for.

I hope he gets the help he needs. Make sure you are getting the help you are needing as well.
