Hello,

I would like to know if anyone else experiences immersive flashbacks, wherein you lose touch with the now and are completely in the past. It seems like I'm the only one who does *shrug*

Yep.

Come to find the full on, movie style, 5+ senses, nightmare whilst awake type IS fairly rare... but they’re my normal.

I get single sense ones, too, especially oflactory & pain... but at a rough estimate they’re maybe 10% to 90% fully immersive.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
  1. the expression and consequent release of a previously repressed emotion, achieved through reliving the experience that caused it (typically through hypnosis or suggestion).
"he was using dream abreaction to treat a schizoid patient"
From google.
No i personally havent experienced abreaction.
However i live in the house i grew up in as a baby and i do have flashbacks if im n the bathroom for example. Ita now 2019. My bathroom in 1995 looked different. I remembered last week while ibwas in the shower. I remember my mom abusing me physically and i remember the walls were wood like a sauna. I remembered the plasic marble shower liner and the old soap holder even! And then the backbrush my mom used on me when i was 2 to hit me in the head with. She still owns it and i saw it at her place when i visited for christmas in her shower!
Not through therapy have i experienced this but just happening in the same years later.

If I recall they're also referred to as spontaneous abreactions when not brought on through hypnosis?

I have had many different types of flashbacks but none that were all encompassing. During the past year and a half (1 1/2) I have been having all different types of flashbacks. Mostly it is 1 single “sense” although recently I had a “movie” style flashback as if watching a video but “certain parts were black” then I could see things but they seemed “glowy”. for example I saw a bush and above the bush is a bright white light - it glistens - it is so beautiful! I think it has to do with “fixation”. Fixing your attention on 1 item so that I could “disappear” from the event. Another time a “visual” opened up and there were dark purple blobs moving around on top. I always had an aversion to colors: now I notice I see and admire the colors of cars. Also - I used to have an aversion to green peppers NOW I love them! It has been a hellish year but I notice other issues I have are also disappearing: like finally tossing out a long-time friend of mine because of her lying and sticking to my decision, an ebbing of my compulsive overeating, etc. nothing is “obvious” everything is subtle and I am so grateful. I have had to come to some grim conclusions and it has been painful but I hurt for awhile then the hurt goes away.

Most of my flashbacks are immersive... the other suckers I'm very busy moving out are emotional / mental / awareness fragments of the whole thing.

But disagree those are abreactions.
Both theoretical & practical.

Abreactions supposes AFAIK *repressed* something, and single (emotional) content, now lived out.

The flashes? I know I lived it.
And it's not as simple as a single blip, relived, now out for good.

With the repressed relived ones?
Still wish it were so fricking simple.
Because if it were I'd save some of my friends heckuva grief, sleepless nights, plane tickets, meds costs, and other shit they do just to keep me alive when I touch that nonsense.

Ok, wait.......What are flashbacks that AREN'T immersive? I've always thought I didn't have many, because I've only had a couple of the more or less immersive kind. There are other kinds?

Yeah i get them. It's like a video tape playing in my head and I can't stop it. It is exhausting/demoralizing and shit!
your not alone!
