For the love of chickens

I just sold 7 roosters, 4 hens and 10 chicks. I must not be charging enough because I usually have to give away roosters. Now I only my laying flock of 34, 5 chicks, which I'm keeping, 3 more hens that are sold but not paid for and 33 eggs, with at least 2 dozen more coming in May. Plus I bid on some on eBay. People are going crazy. I made sure the gal had my number, and the setup for the chicks. Yikes, it's quiet.

Hatched a new lavender orpington today. I hope it is the opposite sex of the one I hatched a month ago. Eggs are due to hatch all week, but I replaced my dying incubator with a crappy one. Not on purpose, so when I finally get my stimulus check I will buy another one like the one that lasted 4 years.

Today we have 2 new babies. First the one from yesterday, looking pretty:

Then the birchen marans that just hatched this morning:
birchen.webpShe's not dry yet. The third is under the broody hen and I'm not picking her up when her eggs are hatching. She was screaming at me. I don't blame her, I'd scream at her if she tried to steal my baby.

Chickens and turkeys I take care of at the school where I work. The chickens came from a donor with a flock of about 30. Little White is a Leghorn (probably) and Pineapple is a rare Cream Legbar, who was likely given up because she lays olive eggs instead of the coveted blue. Little White might have been donated because her voice sounds like a dying velociraptor’s. They have both tamed down and now “salute” for pretty much anyone who enters the coop. Watching them all forage together (5 chickens and 3 turkeys) is so soothing to me.

This is Nugget, a Cochin. She first started going broody when she was 3 months old and has laid only a handful of eggs in her five years of life. She has incredible stamina for nesting, we’re going on about three months now. I asked her when she was going to join the others and her response was, “Never ever ever.” Reminds me of my own isolation! Lol.
