Fostering Military Dogs

Just made the mistake of visiting the Humane Society website and looking at the large dogs. I want them all!!!! Ugghhh, need to get this fence done soon!!!

When we did it last time our unit deployed without me (after I got hurt) we took my buddies black lab in until has dad could come up and get him a month later. You dont need someones approval just the soilder who's K-9 you plan on caring for when he/she is gone. I hate red tape its such a show stopper. That is why with my service dog We trained on our own I cant stand waiting on the VA and what ever clown is running the government making decisions from their easy office chairs while our boys are comming back all banged up. Just makes me MAD! Ok I'll get off my soap box. I guess what I'm saying is someone in family services at a base by you is sure to have someone who could use help for a day/week/months while they r away.

LOL, semperfido is a great name! Hope the training goes well. Would you mind keeping the forum updated on how this goes? Seems like it could help a lot of Veterans, including mine. I'm going to send him the website and see what he thinks. He has an unruly English Bulldog (such a Marine) and maybe they could train them to work together.

Surprisingly, I have already received an email in reply to my request for clarification. They said that is up to the service member to work out with me and that I should go ahead and apply. So, this will probably work. I cannot imagine someone wanting 2 large dogs to be stuck inside all day. I'd rather be outside instead of stuck in my office all day, and the dogs will have an entire barn to themselves to get out of the elements if they wish. Lucky dogs.

THe service dogs for PTSD is a newer-concept that is just starting to really bloom. Semperfido.org is really spearheading a lot of it on the east coast (based here in new jersey) The co-founder is a retired Marine who was in Fallujah and Ramadi. Good people! They interviewed me last week. After telling them my panic attacks got worse because i had lost my sense of security (my K9 i was "over there" with), they were all the more willing to help me. They are great, non-judgemental people. They have to be careful because some peopel will try and just get some free training and a free service dog and try and BS the PTSD. I guess that is why the doctors letters are required.

I will most def. keep everyone up-to-date. I am hoping they pair me up with a german shepard named Bella. That would be great.

About the dogs being outside, mine have a dog-door. They are blocked off from most of the house, just in case, and CHOOSE to spend most of the day out in the yard!! It doesn't matter that there are blankets and a/c inside. Silly dogs!!

Dog door in an interesting idea except for the racoons.....might be a nasty surprise in the middle of the day or night...lol.

Well progress abounds. I'm meeting with my neighbors this week to discuss the trees and the tree trimmer is coming tomorrow to take a look. If we can get this all done, I can start on the fence next weekend!! I'll have a 4 day weekend over the 4th of July and might be able to get a good start on digging those dreaded post holes.

AND, I submitted my application to be a foster parent to the organization. It will probably take awhile for them to do whatever it is they do so they can be working on that while I build my fence and maybe by the end of July, I'LL HAVE DOGS!!! If they take too long to match me, I'll probably get some of my own but still want a match.
