Hi T^3...
Great to meet a fellow Somalia vet.
Worked along with many US pers on that Operation, esp 10th Mtn and 5th SF.
Much respect to American troops; dialed in and down to earth.
Look forward to further chats.

Cheers

my photo is of my friend Gord and I at the Port in Mog...
I'm the bloke on the left.

Welcome brother...

we say dysfunctional family and its a good term... kinda like JarHead's name taken literally might offend someone on the street... call a US Marine that and it is a compliment..

and as far as heroes we did what we did... ya it was a bit more exciting than working a fast food place but in the end it was a job... it was the separation package it gave us we didn't expect is all.. .

do some reading see what ya think...

Hey brother...

It's a damn good term and thanks for letting me in on its context.(I love it)
Yes, we did what we were trained and paid to do. I say heroes cause to me you all are.

I served with some Marines in Mog back in May and June 93.
Awesome guys. My cousin served with the Corps from 89-94.
And yea, I loved calling you guys Jarheads. It was all in fun tho.

Much respect my friend, Sempre Fi.

Actually, my head IS shaped like a jar. :ROFLMAO:

Most people don't know how that term came about. Some think it's because of our lovely haircut, high and tight, but it's not. It's that a Marines head is empty till filled with what ever we're supposed to know, like a JAR. At least that's what they told us. It was believe that or go on a 20 mile force march, HMM...................... I Believe. !!!!!!!

Jar

well I was a different shade of green... I was an FMF Corpsman (Navy).. did 2 tours with USMC Expeditionary Forces... best damn tours I served... They were Devil Dogs.. we were Devil Docs... a term they awarded us with... good to see u along! lots of experience with this here...

I heard the explanation for the term from Dad once let me call him real quick.. might be the same as yours...

Well, may be a diff shade but we all put our boots on one at a time.haha

That's some heavy dope my friend, I always marvelled at medics. Some guys didnt cut them any slack but I found they were just as gritty as the troop.

I read your post and wanted to add that you are good with words and able to express things clearly.
Also you have a good balance of self deprecation, which is a plus in our trades.(combat arms)
The ghosts and faces you see, each are a story and I found I have come to peace by embracing my PTSD. And part of that is by relaying the stories of my experiences... good and bad.

Go easy and keep in touch.
