Sadly humor is relative... in the eye of the beholder. Never thought that "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" would be offensive though.. it's classic... not in a million years.

I just aced my Masters level Business Communications course, I know how to write an email and keep it appropriate.

No, you don't. That joke was an example of writing in the context of a work friendship. Now, that's not egregious behavior, when the friendship is mutual. But connected to an ask for a job opportunity, yeah, I can see a 25 year-old not handling that well.

I'm inclined to think it was the combination of the two - something that read like flirting (wink wink nudge nudge) and something that read like favor-seeking (because you implied she's more 'in the know' than you are).

I'm not trying to cause you more bad feeling, just letting you know how it might have read, from her angle.

No,that's fine, I'd like to understand wth happened! lol yes, you are right about the context being a work friendship, not a letter to the shareholders, etc etc. But I personally don't believe business communications needs to be stuffy. I understand how the message I intend to send, should be received in the intended manner, but "wink wink nudge nudge", must cross generational barriers apparently. What she probably didn't understand and I haven't implied to y'all is the Project Manager task fell in her lap whether she wanted it or not, and hiring a new PM could benefit us both.

Unfortunately we now live in a world where you have to be REALLY careful about everything that you say and do as it's all monitored in one way or another, and it's so easy for words to be misconstrued. Work doesn't have to be stuffy but it's best to avoid anything that could even be perceived as inappropriate.

Cripes, I see all manner of ill things cuz of the above... I'd personally rather express myself and take my risks/and yeah maybe consequences than scrub it to oblivion for a p.c. crowd but hey that's just me an probably why I don't make the big bucks.

That's how I feel. I scrapped an application I had in to that department cause I like to work with fun people. I'm not tacky/tasteless, but humor is important to me. I gotta be me.

Never been called Girlfriend before, strangely I don't mind, lol. I've been in management for like 15 years...It's pretty stressful. I took a menial job so I can focus on school. JoeyLittle says I don't know how to write, so I better stick with it.
