Hard to be hopeful. how do you stay positive?

I was going to post about how a year has gone by since my trauma, and how hopeful I was about the future. Then, on the anniversary of the stabbing on campus, someone broke into my home. This was something I had nightmares about, although I am thankful that I was not home and my roommate was not was not attacked, I now don't even feel safe in my own home. How do you guys stay positive about your lives? Make yourselves feel safe? I honestly feel defenseless and hopeless, that at any moment I'm going to be attacked and/or die.
 
Since I was a child I compartmentalized the trauma. It works pretty good, at least until something triggers me. Having my house broken in to would be a huge trigger.

My therapist says if the fear lasts longer than 90 seconds then it's an injury. The break-in doesn't need to harm you or your roommate physically to injure you.
