i graduated hs in 98 and joined the army in 2000 and served for 6 years. I have been battling PTSD and trying to avoid medication. i have been going to therapy off and on for the last few years and just trying to see the alternatives. i just have a family history that is not favourable towards prescription meds. i smoke marijuana pretty regularly and have found this to help a lot with my anxiety. but just trying to see other peoples experiences. i still need to read through all the previous posts, but thought i should do an introduction as encouraged by another member to get the ball rolling. thanks.

also, to mention, i started painting and drawing and gardening a lot in the past year which has helped me a lot with anxiety.

Welcome Matt, I gather you saw active service??? Just checking because we can be pretty particular and some people just can't read.

Anyway, from my perspective, the only way to get better a little and manage life is to get a medication regime going and seek therapy until your in a good place. Prescription meds are not the bad thing, it's misuse that is where it goes pear shaped. And being a drug addict myself who was also addicted to marijuana, can I say that in my opinion, unless you are growing a specific breed targeting your symptoms, you would be better off without it.
Pot brings on symptoms like anxiety which us PTSD sufferers have an issue with. Pot can also make us paranoid and and not want to go out places which would also not make our hypervigilence very good.

But then again, what would I know. You live life the way you want this is just an opinion.

Just remember, there are thousands of prescription meds out there and new ones getting approved each month, you just have to find one to fit you. Try to stay clear of the benzo family if you have an addictive nature.

yes, active duty. i have a few family members that have similar traits as me that are stuck on prescription meds. i am not experienced in that area, but just see that it might be a rocky avenue. with marijuana, i have no problem with it causing anxiety . the first time i smoked was a very anxious awakening, but since then it seems to be the only thing to mellow me out.
