Hi all

I don't really know where to start so I guess I will just say a bit about myself. I am currently working on my masters degree in social work, it is also what I have my undergrad in. I am working at a domestic violence shelter right now, so I see a lot of bad things come in and out of my doors.

The reason I am here is six years ago I was sexually assaulted by a stranger, a man I cannot put a name to. A counselor finnaly gave me the diagnosis of PTSD about a week ago after six years of nobody listening to what I was telling them. My family has no idea and neither do my friends, so really, this is it. I have nowhere else to go at this point.

Thanks for anyone who has listened this for it means a lot

Welcome to the forum Brynn! It's nice for someone to acknowledge your issues isn't it? Feel free to browse around all the wonderful information on this site. For me it has helped me greatly in times of need.

Hi Brynn,
I'm also new to the forum but thought I'd join even though I'm now in remission (apparently that's the technical term rather than 'cured'). I was sexually assaulted about 2 1/2 years ago by my ex husband and he subsequently suicided. That meant I had to deal with the trauma of the attack as well as the impact of the death on my two kids. It took me about 6 months to get a diagnosis of ptsd and saw a really good psychologist who specialises in ptsd for 2 years. I stopped regular sessions about 4 months ago, with the promise that I would go back if symptoms reappear. I'm sorry it took so long for you to be heard... it must have been really tough for you to deal with all of that for such a long time by yourself. My background is in Social Welfare btw :D.
happy to exchange messages on here...

Hi Brynn

There are many causes of PTSD.

Sometimes there are events in the distant past that make us more susceptible to it, then later in life some new trauma brings them to the fore.

In my case there were some 30 or so years between traumas, but believe me, the results are just as devastating. For me there was childhood abuse followed by a teenage pregnancy and adoption of the baby. I coped with this ok until the 'child' turned up in his 30's, agressive and abusive - he wrecked the stability of my family with his demented take on the problems of his life and who had caused them. My husband became insanely jealous and abusive. Two years after, I have cancer, then my Mother dies.

The last was the proverbial 'straw'ánd I am in full-blown PTSD.

I am getting somewhere with the help of a Human Givens councellor. I would urge you to try this. Read the books at least if you can - they make so much sense, and it's the only real help I have had so far that seems to work.

Best of luck.

Nicola
