I appreciate my diagnosis because it helps to narrow down my treatment options. And in the USA it's necessary when dealing with insurance. (Well, much of the time.)
On one hand I understand not liking labels. God knows I hate them! (In some circumstances.) But on the other hand, my label has given me a direction because I have a specific realm (if you will) in which to work. I'm not searching for ADD or bipolar or schizophrenic treatment options.
If we went to a label-less system, it would be chaotic. Labels (when used) need to be descriptive rather than prescriptive or restrictive. It's not about using it as an excuse. Rather, it's a well needed explanation.
