For those of you who found a PTSD therapist, how did you find one?
Actually what I looked for was a Trauma Specialist not a PTSD therapist. I've seen Ts with PTSD experience and they weren't that great. I had two before I found my current T who is a Trauma Specialist.
That said, the T who helped me the most years ago had absolutely zip experience with PTSD, DID, mind control, and ritual abuse. He became an expert by treating me and learning the ropes.
I found my T through recommendations for different therapist practices and online research for my area. I used PsychologyToday.com, FindATherapist.com, CounselingWashington.com, YellowPages.com, HelpPro.com, and HealthGrades.com. Armed with the therapists who appeared to have my type of abuse experience and those who were trauma specialist, I placed a message on their answering machine that stated I was looking for a T with experience in ritual abuse, DID, and PTSD. I wanted to be quite specific with my message because I didn't want a T who knew about PTSD only. Other survivors have told me to not be so specific because it's possible it would be a turn off for a therapy practice, yet I was determined to tell it like it was. Luckily, my directness paid off and I found a great T who has experience with Satanic Ritual Abuse, Ritual Abuse, Mind Control, and knows about Serial Killers. My father was a serial killer. Unusual to find someone who knows about serial killers. She's never worked with one yet has extensive research into them, like 30 plus years.
