How to keep positive job hunting?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I was just thinking that I have gotten enough side income to manage at least a couple of months. While job hunting. Now one thing fell through and I am supposed to get it together in 3 weeks. Or if not to somehow both make enough income to replace what I need AND to be starting a new job at the same time. POSSIBLY be starting an online store and blog to promote it for any chance of even small income from that. And I have health issues and mental health stuff to keep balanced and it's a LOT. And I am not a child anymore and I know how long it takes, BOTH finding new work AND online businesses. How am I to have faith, with all that I know about how things work, and about my situation, how am I supposed to have faith that I can manage this?

I'm sorry that this isn't so positive but this just hit me out of nowhere.
I just...
I am struggling right now just to manage this situation, how am I also to manage ever having savings with this mess?
How do I keep all these balls in the air until things get stable, how do I keep faith that I can get better? I was just starting to feel secure and bam, something more happens. And I don't even have time for baby steps and learning and what not- money must be made, things must be paid, and I somehow must keep it together. And I have to somehow have faith that it can happen, and have a zillion mini side jobs and somehow make it happen with all that is going on in the world. Unemployment and disability not an option yet. I have to handle this (and let's face it, by the time I do handle it, I won't need them. oh joy).
I'm sorry! Panicking. A lot. Hopefully, I'll cry it out tomorrow, pay all that needs to get paid and then somehow figure this out. In the timeframe I have.
All I know is a. at least I can finally pay my rent(made deal with my landlord, so it's already a week late, so I'm lucky I can pay it) and living bills and stuff
and b. I won't solve this crying and panicking, so I need to get it out of my system, sleep it off and start fresh.

Please comment if you want for support, if you have useful ideas and if you can think of any inspiring book or movie that can be useful.
p.s. in terms of services and helpful organizations, I am not in the USA, and also I'm a foreigner where I live which limits what I have access to.
Also, I have been self-employed for the longest time, so I don't have credit cards to max out. So, I'm pretty much on my own.
Though in fairness I have survived a lot, so... there's some hope that somehow I can handle this.

It is a difficult time to be job hunting and managing it all. I feel for you.

I am glad that you are aware that you have survived a lot and it's good to see you being fair to yourself about that.

I wonder if you are able to get any downtime at all, just to give your brain a little break? Obviously, that's not going to get the bills paid but it sounds like you are pushing as hard as you can and could have a real mental health crisis on your hands if you don't get a chance to wind down a little. I know I wouldn't want to hear that if I were in your position but it's an honest concern. Sometimes, we are doing all we can and continuing to worry/plan/push through the anxiety and stress is hurting our efforts and making them difficult to sustain.

I know this sucks and it's hard and it's difficult for me to stop trying to make forward motion when I feel like things are falling in around me but sometimes I have to force myself to sit down and try to get calm throughout the day just to keep myself from burning out.

I am sorry. This sounds really stressful. I hope the right opportunity finds you very soon.

What job skills do you have for an online business?

Thank you! Just writing on here is something, to feel like I'm not entirely alone.
I wonder if you are able to get any downtime at all, just to give your brain a little break?
Yeah, I try to. I must, it's not a choice. Your concern is valid, I always have mental health issues when things get this stressful so I know I can't neglect that, unless it comes down to survival. It's hard though, my best venting in hard times was always physical, ballet classes and working out. And now with my back working out always brings anxiety. Any ideas for breaks that are not quite so physical?

Thank! Your support means a lot. I hope so too.
What job skills do you have for an online business?
Well, I've done calendar management and virtual assistant work, so not a lot experience but I have done it. I've worked with a lot of apps and programs and I am constantly learning new ones so I can quickly pick up those. I have basics for Photoshop, Inkscape, Canva, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Lastpass, Mailchimp, Dropbox, Canva, etc. So virtual assistant work, typing, transcription(have done for a while.

Also, I'm good at drawing/painting (ink, watercolor)- that's the thing I was always effortlessly good at, sort of born with it.
For business I was thinking online store on Etsy for planner and bullet journal printables, watercolor clipart, printable collage pages, printable coloring pages- I can do any of these since I'm planner and bullet journal geek, I know the programs to edit and make on computer, and I can draw and scan by hand. So anything printable I can do. Have blog or YT channel to talk about productivity and organisation and promote it.

Also may use social media to try to upload some art to promote and try to get some drawing side gigs. But printables store is the idea. One day I'd like to have patreon as an artist, build blog to point of income(with advertisements, also having my own products such as art, ebooks on some subjects and so on- but need to build social media first. Have BA on journalism and multimedia, so have the base for a lot of things, just need time to develop something.

Maybe light stretching/yoga, baths, guided meditation, drawing, playing an instrument - that sort of thing?? I got most of those suggestions from members here recently while trying to figure out how to get myself to slow down. I also have high anxiety and my go to for breaks is typically exercise-related by my PT has recently been pushing me to do the sorts of things mentioned above in order to slow my brain down. It seems to be helping but I still have to really force myself.

Have you looked at fundraising jobs at all? I don't know any job titles out of the U.S. but with that degree and the skills you have, entry-level fundraising may be something you could get into. I have been looking at fundraising jobs under the titles of development assistant and development associate in the U.S. There are a lot of virtual positions in America right now - maybe there, too? These jobs typically require better writing skills than what's needed for administrative assistant work, so your journalism degree could be very helpful. Just a thought.

Thank you for the activities suggestions! I can't really consider these kinds of jobs. They seem like jobs you have to do locally, but my knowledge of the local language is not enough for the kind of writing required.

My knowledge of the local language is enough for possibly only basic level jobs. Or, jobs in English, which are few but I will take what I can get for now.
Might be taking language course soon to improve that. Thanks for the idea though, that is not a job I even thought about/knew existed.
My idea was to try to get job at a call center with just English or something like, you know, receptionist jobs etc.(hoping it can be kind of job you get fast) and continue to work that and side jobs until I find something better or know the language enough to expand the jobs I am suitable for.
Also, all the stuff I mentioned about blog/patreon/writing/art still stand, since drawing might be my best skill, but I need to be financially stable first.

Good virtual assistants who know their stuff with online design work, can make some good money! Sounds like you have a lot of terrific online skills! I have an online business....consider making a business plan....that helped me focus....I have way to many interests, and directions I want to go in....sounds like you have the same.
A written annual buisness plan I found really helpful. Plus, as you develop your business, your blog, you will find purpose in getting up every day with a plan for the day....and one day, you will look back and see 25 items posted......then 50 ....and so on.....and over time if it is downloadable, the work is done and the money keeps rolling in and you can take a couple days off..here and there. Good luck with that.

Call center and administrative assistant positions are definitely more abundant than fundraising jobs, so if you are already headed in those directions and have good phone skills, my suggestion probably just complicates things. But a lot of people who need these folks are hiring remote workers for these roles at present. Many of these appear to be planning on keeping the positions remote.

Also, I am currently taking a course on finding remote jobs and I want to correct something else I said. Apparently, if you are looking for remote work, doing everything you can to optimize your resume for the specific job you are applying to is exactly what you ought to do. I was told by two employment specialists to stop making myself nuts by doing this but I think that their work with local people seeking local jobs was the reason I got different information than I am getting now. Now that I am looking for remote work only, I am in need of remote-specific advice which I was not getting, previously.

The course I am taking is offered by Rat Race Rebellion which was founded by the folks that basically created the virtual assistant movement many moons and I trust it for that reason. You very well may already be up to date on this but the course says that you should not only optimize that resume when looking for remote work but also make sure that the words you use to describe your skills are the same ones the employer is using. For instance, if the job listing mentions "administrative" skills, you don't want to call your skills "clerical" skills on the resume for that job. This has to do with automated resume screening.

I apologize for giving bad information. I thought employment specialists ought to be good sources of information but apparently, not everyone is up on remote positions and remote hiring practices, yet. Hopefully, I'll get caught up and give better information, myself, next time,

Virtual positions....online positions....are most often remote positions and you communicate via Zoom or other video platform for more complex work. I hired a gal in Saudia Arabia, to edit my work.....to do some graphic design work, product production work, nonfiction writing and she did a bang-up job at a very reasonable price. I have an intern now....they offer certifications for online assistants....Virtual assistants can be site managers who do the marketing piece (pinterest, blog writing), web design work, and a whole host of other noncomplex tasks. Selling downloadable items has the lowest overhead, easiest storage, and you aren't tied down to a hard and fast schedule in doing it....Good luck finding your niche!

That is something that you have to vendor out to having positive job-hunting skills go on youtube, and see what type of jobs. I normally use that as a way to help me.

You can create an online educational store on Teacher's Pay Teachers (60$) and sell clipart, coloring pages, thank you cards, flashcards, photos, whatever you're heart desires. You could even sell step by step virtual art lessons.........and if you do clipart for others....you can retain the right to your original black and whites....make them for someone, and color them differently and make motivational stickers or digital stickers or moveable stickers....there is so much out there people with computer and design skills can do.
