Most offenders have, on average, about 3-7 victims. The ridiculous numbers of victims other sources suggest are wrong, and have been shown to be wrong by studies completed on these studies.

I'd say 3-7 IS a ridiculous number. 3-7 lives ruined because of some freak who likes to diddle with children instead of get a full grown woman of his own. EWW. Yet you sit there and act like "oh, its only 3-7". (Not a direct quote, rather the impression you give.) If 2-6 other people suffer just like I do for my abuser's actions, then I'd say there isn't all that much inside a sex offender that makes them worth of life. To cause such devastation is pure....evil. Ever wonder what makes certain people turn toward the dark side and abuse others while others turn toward the light and don't pass on the evilness? I'd say there is something very dark inside of these people, something very, very dark. And the thing is, there is no rehabilitation for evil. It just is. You can try to repress it, but it never goes away. Argue with me all you want. That quote is spot on....you're evil but you don't know how evil you are.

I am a former abuser and a former sex offender, a former abuser of children, and I wanted to comment.

Please. There is no "former" about it. The law makes you register for life in most instances.

Most sex offenders, after treatment, actually have low rates of recidivism. This, of course, does not include those who enacted acts of physical violence during the commission of their crimes. Such persons, be they sex offenders or not, who have demonstrated such callous indifference towards the physical suffering of fellow human being should never, ever see the light of day again. This is a sad but true necessity; we can't have people running around who care nothing for the suffering of others.

I agree completely.

Shocker... Rape IS physically violent & callous indifference towards the physical suffering of a fellow human being. Even the idea that it's not demonstrates exactly that indifference.

Thank you, Pietro, for your courage and compassion to hear what I had to say. Thank you, MYPTSD, for allowing me to participate. For those who did express compassion towards me or were positively affected by my words; thank you. For those of you who reminded me how "evil" and repugnant I am; I understand more than you know. I bear no ill will towards you; only sadness for your pain.

I would like to respond further, especially to other valid concerns and criticisms, but I fear that my continued presence may unintentionally cause harm to those who have already been harmed.

If I had my way, I would set up prisons specifically for sexual offenders. We would endure the same punishments as any other criminal within these institutions. But these institutions would also have sex offender treatment programs going on, as well as research. Being around only sex offenders, the offender feels less threatened in discussing their crimes and their motivations. We would be free to talk openly and honestly about those issues that helped us make such atrocious decisions. We could do this without fear of retaliation, which would, I think, be a boon to the effectiveness of treatment, helping us be a substantially lesser threat to those wtith whom we share this world. But that is only my subjective opinion.

Seriously??? So you can get off on telling war stories to each other without fear of other prisoners retaliating against baby rapers. Gee.

Why just pick out someone's indifference to the physical suffering of their victims. This just demonstrates to me that you don't f*cking get it. At all. Your victims suffer whether you physically hurt them or not. If you are an example of what rehabilitation looks like then that's f*cking scary.

The state I live in has a civil commitment program for what they deem to be "high risk sex offenders". Those who have been "determined as being at a particularly high risk of re-offending". It was just declared unconstitutional because "not enough people graduate". On my way home the other day, they were doing a program on this on the public radio station I listen to a lot. They had a group of "experts" representing the point of view that @sex offender expressed. I missed the first part. Don't know exactly who these people were. I don't end up yelling at people on the radio often...... I told my T about this program. Said that "maybe the reason they don't 'graduate' more people is that most of them never reach the criteria for graduation!" (Duh!) They cited some statistics on how low the recidivism rate is, as did our guest. They never said where they got them. Before I buy any of that, I want to see the studies.

Last, but certainly not least, "these people" often succeed because they have to ability to be persuasive. Without using guns and knives. Is being manipulative in that way REALLY less of a bad thing than using a weapon? I'm not sure it is. If someone rapes me at gun point, I might be terrified but at least I know where we stand. He's the bad guy, I'm not. Pure and simple. "Trick me" into performing oral sex on you? Harder to sort out whose "fault" it was. I almost think I'd prefer the clarity. And, since I'm quite well aware of how good "these people" can be at being manipulative, WHY is it I'm supposed to think it's safe to trust them now, when they say they're "better"? There are some bridges that, once you burn them they're gone. Period. No do overs and I'm not going to be stupid enough to give any second chances without a more convincing demonstration of change. I'm not taking the word of a liar for anything.

@SexOffender It does take courage and to a much lesser extent, compassion, to hear what you have to say. I feel compassion for the sickness in your mind and soul that causes you to have such evil thoughts..and I do feel it is a sickness. A cancer of sorts.. However, my compassion ends there. Residivism is rampant among sex offenders and statistics prove that time and time again. Reintegrating a sexual offender into society is like holding a loaded gun to your head, pulling the trigger and hoping you don't blow your brains out. Protecting and attempting to rehabilitate offenders is pointless if most re offend anyway. It speaks volumes that even the prison population..societies thieves, murderers, and degenerates have no compassion for rapists of any kind..and their treatment in prison is the closest thing to justice that most of their victims will ever see. The punishments are not harsh enough and that is the problem. Society has become indifferent. And tolerates the injustice. So I look at what happens to them as nothing more than mere consequences of their actions. Teaching them some, empathy, if you will..

But at the end of the day, the urges are still there..and they still get it up at the thought of sexually violating and desecrating a human spirit. And there is no rehabilitating that..

the thing is, sex offenders are human. abuse is part of the human element. as intelligent animals, we evolved the ability to be cruel and malevolent to one another. i think it downplays the intricacy of human social dynamics to just declare all behavioural deviants as "not human." we're not, as sexual abuse victims, touched by something "inhuman." they are human. some humans are really f*cked up.

we have a system whereby people go to prison, and then they leave prison. The drug dealer, the pimp, the rapist - the efforts made towards their rehabilitation are grossly small compared to the efforts made towards (and by) sex offenders.

All true. At least in the US, the penal system is grossly outdated in most areas, often having changed little in over 100 years. Rehabilitation is rarely a goal; instead, it's punishment, revenge, containment, etc. -- everything but trying to prepare these people for their eventual release. Both a lack of money and political will are to blame.

One thing that could help released inmates is an after-release program that checks-up on them, offers continued services such as therapy, group activities, or whatever might be deemed helpful. As a taxpayer, I have no problem putting money into such things, as they are far cheaper, in the long run, than the current in-and-out-and-back-in cycle that the majority of offenders go through. And, also, far better for the society at large.

Our society has a lot of maturing to do.

Even more important is figuring-out how to build a society that keeps people out of the penal system merry-go-round in the first place.

The punishments are not harsh enough and that is the problem.

Punishment is not a great deterrent -- especially not for something as compulsion-driven as sexual deviancy. People with such overpowering compulsions will continue to act repetitively -- in much the same way as abuse victims who sometimes relive their abuse -- until they receive intervention through therapy, which can eventually provide tools for abating and managing the compulsions. These compulsions are very much like addictions.

If we're going to release these people from prison, they need to be monitored and assisted, likely, for the remainder of their lives, because of the possibility of recidivism. This is the reality for handling sex offenders. Wishing it away through harsh punishment, ostracization, or other Draconian method is not a realistic expectation.

Sexual crime in and of itself will never go away and I fully understand that. But I absolutely believe these people need to be punished severely and ostracized. I think they should be branded like cattle..because they will forever be a danger to society as long as they are not institutionalized. Rehabilitation is just a bullshit word these perverts use so they can justify jerking off to a five year old. "I still want to molest little suzy, but I PINKY SWEAR that I won't because I'm "rehabilitated." Convicted sex offenders need to either spend the rest of their lives in prison or get the death penalty. Whether these people can control their urges or not, they still made a choice to violate, degrade, and desecrate a human mind, body, and soul..knowing the entire time that they would be deeply traumatizing their victims and scarring them for the rest of their lives. Consciously manipulating and betraying innocent people. And, yet knowing all this beforehand, they still commit these heinous crimes. And for what...for sexual gratification?! These people destroy lives so that they can have an orgasm and I'm supposed to waste my tax dollars trying to "rehabilitate" them so that maybe they can become a productive member of society again?! These people are sick and there is no amount of treatment that is going to erradicate that. Reintegrating them into society is just dangerous. Lock them up, throw away the key and call it done. There is no use for these people in the civilized world. Period.
I live in a society where 98% of rapists walk free and 68% of rapes go unreported. I also live in a society that glamorizes rape culture, degenerate sex, and sexual objectification. So for me the biggest issue isn't providing human rights to scum bags..it's figuring out how we can deter this horrible crime from happening in the first place?! And figuring out when exactly our society became so complacent to such atrocities.
Maybe if 98% rapists didn't walk free and instead spent the rest of their lives rotting away in prison where they belong, then maybe little Suzy wouldn't have to be afraid to tell when daddy touched her. Maybe then she wouldn't have to feel so ashamed, ostracized and alone. And maybe..just maybe..daddy will think twice. Because this time..it's not gonna be so easy to get away with..and Suzy doesn't have feel so afraid anymore.

Because the victims are the only ones that really suffer. They are the ones left broken and alone to pick up the pieces. Nobody gives a shit about their human rights. There is entirely way too much compassion shown sex offenders..to people who through their actions show no compassion. And not enough is shown towards their victims. There is a reason that rape is used as a form of torture..that it is used as a weapon of war. Because it is evil..and there is no rehabilitating evil. That may sound Draconian and maybe it is..but so is the crime..and it's about time the world begin to recognize that. Only then can the healing begin..
