So today after a referral from my counselor, I went to go see my PCP and he recomended that I begin taking 50mg trazadone and 25mg vitrisil (hydroxyzine). Has anyone ever taken any of these for flashbacks and depression related to PTSD?? Those are my main concerns. I took the hydroxyzine earlier because I'm supposed to take it daily I guess, and it completely knocked me out. So...any advice on either of these?

Hi,

Do you have the option of seeing a psychiatrist?

Trazadone is used mainly for sleep these days even though it’s technically an antidepressant. There are better drugs out there for depression so I’m a bit surprised that it’s the first drug your doc is putting you on for depression as it’s not really a first line of defense kind of drug, at least not for depression. (I took it for insomnia at one point.)

Vistaril is for anxiety and it’s an antihistamine so it can knock you out.

As far as I know there are no drugs that treat flashbacks themselves.

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine (like Benadryl, but a whole lot stronger) with the side effect of causing most people to relax/sleep... It's often used during surgery with anesthesia, and post OP.

Trazadone is another med that's used mostly for sleep.

So I'd suspect that these are both intended as bedtime meds. Check with your doc.

Personally, I can't take either. But everyone's neurochem is different, and there's no real way to know how anyone is going to respond to any medication without trying them, yourself.

Trazadone has a side effect that hits some rather hard - vivid dreaming. Since there are other options for sleep meds and antidepressants, and flashbacks are a issue for you....if you also struggle with night disturbances, I’d suggest looking into other options besides trazadone.

(Unless, of course, it doesn’t affect you in that way)

i have been using small dose of trazezone at bedtime for about 3 years. 50mg. i started with more back then as my mind was spinning so much i could not sleep. Once i got that situation balanced out, i decided to continue as it helped me get at least 4 or so hours sleep without waking up. I may wean myself off in this next year.
