I Am Getting Free "meals On Wheels" And I Am Ungrateful!

This week, when we had guests here and a plan to all go and eat in a restaurant, I came home from work to the pan of soup and also a pan of cooked mince. Rory had accepted them with thanks. I simply put them straight in the freezer.

Then Rory told me later that he has lied to Mr M and said it was all really tasty - it may well be, but that is not the point. I am really annoyed as that would have been the ideal opportunity to demonstrate that we are grateful but it is not always appropriate.

Perhaps, invited him over for a meal of his own making
No! Sometimes I do invite him over, but the whole point is to cook him something that he cannot do for himself - like a roast dinner with pork crackling and all the trimmings. He has had many a meal with us, and I know he enjoys it. I think it would insult if I fed back to him the gift he had given us.

So maybe this is the problem... he is so grateful he feels compelled to repay your kindness of cooking him a meal he enjoys. Maybe the key to this is letting him know he owes you nothing more than his company for the meals you prepare and that your gift is just that - a gift and does not require any repayment?

Yesterday was a classic example of my ongoing frustration. Mr M phoned Rory and told him there was more soup ready for him to collect. Rory pointed out that we were going out to dinner - with Mr M!!! He said he had not really thought about that...

So we never collected the soup. While we were at dinner together I did tell him it is all appreciated but far too much.
