When I was younger I would have night terrors. The thing that always calmed me was that in all of those terrors there was a black panther in the corner. That was always reassuring for some reason. I'm not a spiritual person, but I like to think that that panther was looking over me when I was younger.

one is not an animal, butterfly's

Actually, insects are animals. You can pick butterflies up by the wings as long as you hold them in between the sides of your fingers. Just don't use your fingertips because they're too oily and will stick to the wing scales. Then carefully give their body a light squeeze with your other hand. If you do it right it won't do any damage, but it will stun the butterfly. After that, you can put it down in your hand and it will just calmly sit there for a little while.

I think my spirit guides are wasps. That's what shows up for me when I'm having a hard time. On one of my worst days I came home and had a wasp waiting for me right at eye level on my apartment door even though it was the middle of December and freezing cold outside. And it's a long story, but I think an Ampulex saved my life.

Someone mentioned something about power totems. I'm pretty sure my power totem is a cicada killer. Asshole took me with him to run an errand once. Outside the building we were going to there was an immense aggregation of them. I was so happy when I saw them that I forgot I was supposed to be behaving like a prisoner. Instead, I just started laughing and ran straight into the swarm. I immediately had little friends coming up to investigate me. Cicada killers have so much personality. They're totally fearless and just as curious as I am. After a few minutes, Asshole came in after me, and he was pissed. Women aren't supposed to do things to draw attention to themselves, like squealing with glee and running into clouds of gigantic wasps. I will never forget the look on his face when he grabbed my arm. He looked terrified. It only lasted for a moment, but all of a sudden everything was reversed. In that place I was happy and powerful, and he was the one who was afraid.

Also, they seemed to enjoy stinging him. They never sting me. :)

Yeah, wolves don't tend to be looked upon fondly by many humans, from what I've heard and seen through the years, @Bkinder . Most especially if they own livestock. The predator animals get taken out by one of the biggest predators of all....of the human variety. But so do countless innocent non-predator types, daily. We take 'em out if we love them even more so than if we hate them, based on daily menu options. Imagine that. Exchanging hard earned monetary current-$ee/time/effort/energies to actively "own" the flesh and body fluids of other beings, then caging those other beings to where they can't readily escape harm if they need to, all in the name of "humanely protecting/raising/killing" them.

Then having natural animal instincts kicking in once in a while as the still uncaged "wild" beings freely roam the land (as nature intended) happening by and grabbing what I guess would be considered our version of "fast-food", most especially when/if profits are to be made by eventually slitting the throats of the caged beings, ensures an all-out war against whatever species takes from them, and is just one of the many poorly thought out energy exchanges us humans decided to make the "norm" by allowing it to become a thriving industry as many continue to feed it lots and lots of money, encouraging even more death and behind the scenes abuse and shit, then wonder why our own energies seem so "off" much of the time as we simply try to go about our days. Gee, I wonder.

All animals tend to have both a "good" side and a "bad" side. However, the human variety has been the most active in directly showing me blatant examples of the less than desirable sides day in and day out, where they continue to choose the most harmful of choices even when there are clearly other options, based on individual circumstances, of course.

The other various species haven't directly caused me, or themselves, harm on purpose that I can recall. Minus mosquitoes. Those little bastards are an exception. Granted, I've never lived openly in an area full of ravenous predators of another species who would consider me a menu item, other than bears, who haven't harmed me as of yet, but only took some of our corn.

Yeah, wolves don't tend to be looked upon fondly by many humans, from what I've heard and see...

Wolves have gotten a bad rap over time. Long ago, the belief and fear of the werewolf, the wolf became evil....because people believed the rumors....wolves were to be feared. Then think of what we were taught as children by story books, the evil fairy tales....Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Pigs, and of course don't forget The Boy Who Cried Wolf and the original versions usually ended a whole lot worse than the more recent and less violent versions of today. The wolf was characterized as not trustworthy, cunning, and deceitful.

As children we learned wolves were bad but you are right, wolves have good qualities too....they are community oriented, stick together and are survivors, are self-confident, have great instincts, and are loyal to themselves, and typically only aggressive when they have to defend family or meet their primary needs.... A good spirit guide!

Unlike humans, wolves protect their family, are much more authentic, predictable, and they don't play mind-games, manipulate, or lie. I'll take wolves any day. A great spirit guide!

It's the Bald Eagle for me. I saw one in the tree across the street a couple of weeks ago, eyeing my...

Me too. There is something strong and protective about a bald eagle!

I wouldn’t have a spirit guide as I’m not Native American

I'm not Native American either but I know many non-native Americans who believe and have spirit guides. There are not just nature spirit guides/power animals but...angels are spirit guides, some religions and cultures have ancestor spirit guides, and there are the more traditional Gods and Goddesses, and some people even have alien spirit guides (I know little to nothing about this) so I believe that anyone can have a spirit guide.....it just has to work for each individual and their personal beliefs. I get comfort from mine in stressful times. The bald eagle appears when I need it....not when I call for it. Rarely, do I see one when I'm not having an anxiety attack. ;)

Funny thing: My cousin told me to talk to it the next time I saw it. I thought she was nutty (she is a Reiki master and has several spirit guides to guide her profession) but the next time I was having an anxiety attack in the car, one appeared and I said hello...and it sent me an immediate calming message.....a very powerful experience! Future encounters happened the same way. Sounds different, but I go with whatever works.

My spirit guide changes frequently.
Black panther - helps me with protection issues
Eagle - helps me see farther than most eyes can
Polar Bear - models freedom for me

I consider my current cat a spirit guide. She is teaching me how to love.laugh.play again. We have a history she and I. I found her and her brothers and sisters at the side of the road one day. They were 3 weeks old. I nursed them all back to health. I gave her to my son and his wife years ago and in January they gave her to me to keep me company. She seems to remember me as she is not comfortable with many other people. I almost feel like she remembers that I am her 'mom'. Silly, but that is how it feels.
