Fin, I think those are excellent examples of trolls! At least by how "troll" is defined on another forum I frequent...several 'members' there have recently been banned for doing similar things. I think of "troll" as someone who's just trying to stir the pot and create upset and chaos.

Oh wow...well... there you go!!
I was trying to explain my concerns over something I had heard about.
...I had no idea...
....it freaked me out when I heard about it, and thought....well its pretty clear I thought you guys should know about it.
Hey...and I feel all kind of...surprised and stuff

thankyou Mina...well, there you go guys...thats trolls.

~fin

you know I went through some kind of something, wondering if it would freak people out with what I was posting about that (I wondered if I should maybe PM it!)...Because it really freaked me out when I heard about it. And you knew about it all along. Feel, kind of like I was trying to teach my Gran to suck eggs? I dont know if thats the expression but I hope you know what I mean...
...good grief Charlie Brown! Having a "d'oh!" moment.

A troll is defined from the wikipedia:
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

I have updated the message that is now sent, which is as follows:

You have received a rules violation at PTSD Forum
Dear anthony_test,

You have received a rules violation notice at PTSD Forum.

This is not a personal matter against you, instead it is simply a method for editors to quickly assimilate rules to all members without prejudice through a standard means. We have over 1000 active members, which simply means it is far too time consuming to personalise every message for members.

We ask you to please read the Forum Rules, Regulations, Conduct and Editorial Policy of this forum, as you have agreed to accept these policies by registering. Rules and policies have for the most part been set by the majority of members of this forum and not the administrators.

Common rules and standards ensure all members are equal, all members are communicating within the same parameters in a multi-national online community.

A testing post to demonstrate the infraction system.............
Again, this is not a personal issue against you, it is merely a method to assimilate the rules quickly to members who may not be in the best place to remember them or care for them at this time, though they have a purpose within the entire community spirit.

All the best,
PTSD Forum
You can review the original post version, to now version, which is sent for both warnings and infractions. I have removed both terms from the headings and used "Rules Violation" instead. I have placed in further explanation so that new members may get a better understanding.

Does this sit better or could it still use more tact in your opinion?

Based on what I have heard/read so far....I think the header message would be better if less direct.....say like "You Have An Editorial Message From the PTSD Forum" and then get into the detail inside.

This may have already been said...but just my 2 cents worth -

While I will agree that wording can mean a lot, I also think the words themselves, are easily miss construed if one is upset. We can change them, but in the end, the only thing that will truly help is changing the way we react to them.

IMHO it seems like this thread itself has quite a few “attacks” against Nicolette which should be infractions, but that is me (maybe I am misconstruing them). I don’t know her, but do see that she spends a lot of her own time here.

I guess all I am saying is everyone gets “bent out of shape at times” isn’t it time to just move on from this issue?

I would agree with Nicolette...

I think the word that could cause a problem in the update and in the notification, so far is the term "Violation".... it is a word some of us have heard too much in another context. And maybe that is why some have reacted to receiving the notice.

I believe it is vastly improved, other than that.

I have no problem with the infraction system if it makes the forum easier to navigate etc. In absolute honesty ...I did find it hard to take initially. I automatically responded with 'oh my god I'm so sorry, what have I done that is so wrong!!'. But that was only until I looked up a thread introducing it in announcements and somebody had written something along the lines of 'it's no big deal, we all make mistakes...its a reminder...no big deal, just don't do it again' and that sorted me out with it. I thought 'yeah, okay... i can accept that. It's not personal, I didnt do it on purpose and didnt realise I'd done it..its just a reminder and now I'll be more mindful when I write a title and I'll not do it again'... in that respect, it served it's purpose well.

It was just that initially I found it felt like I was being told I'd done something wrong on purpose, particularly because it was commented that I know how to write titles and to be nice. Whilst I understand it must be incredibly irritating to have to be telling people how to write basic titles, we all make mistakes and I felt that I'd copped some irritation for 'many wrong titles' all over the forum, when I'd only made my first mistake. But that's interpretive on my part and I could be wrong in saying that. Just my opinion and personal experience though!

But... now I understand what its about, i dont take it so much as punishment, but more a reinforced reminder and I don't see that as a bad thing if it's made clear that this is what it is. If I was being punished in response to being judged as somebody who had deliberately disobeyed or failed to be considerate then I would say in my case, that was harsh. If I was just being reminded and that being reinforced with an infraction... fair enough. So I think it's the meaning of the infraction, rather than the infraction system itself.

Having said all this, I didn't know about the infraction system before I got one and this was my fault for not reading the new policies here when I came back after a long break. If i'd have read up on the new policies here before I made my first two posts, I maybe would not have felt shocked by it and reacted negatively to it at all.

Just my humble opinion, take it or leave it! I have no issues the infraction I received anymore so I feel nonplussed by it now, but I thought I'd give my experience and opinion from at the time anyway.

OH Anthony

I must agree with Nicolette this time. The words Editorial Message comes across MUCH better that the word violation I vote for that

I much prefer the new wording.

I was on the end of one of these messages a while ago (for not capitalising the thread title) and it did upset me. I personally think its because sometimes when I start a thread I'm leaving myself a bit open. It can put you in a slightly vulnerable position and then while you are in that position you get told off.

The new wording gets the point across much better.

Here is the final version, which I believe should satisfy anyone with issues about the wording here on out:
