When I was little we were offered nothing in our family as far as sports, crafts, whatever. ZERO opportunity and if you DID do something special you were not recognized or even noticed. Soooo much talent in the family but parents with zero parenting skills to acknowledge that. Most of us kids really could have been very serious artists, designers... The city once recognized me for something very special that I did.... No parent to acknowledge it, something great was discounted by them and made me and my talent (and myself) utterly worthless. Its such a sad story, when I think of ANY kid in that position I get choked up. It's hard to believe in yourself when you're a kid and you have parents don't believe in you and actually DISCOUNT your talents abilities, etc. I wish I could be adopted but I'm middleaged! Never had one single soul I could look up to in my life.

ANYWAYS!!! you don't sound like you have money so one thing I thought of, you wouldn't believe how cheap it is to rent an instrument a month. TRULY cheap. Grab a cello from yr nearest music store and watch YouTube tutorials.

Also- go on Pinterest and look up cheap crafts, cheap hobbies. You will be AMAZED. The posibilities are endless.

Also, don't give up on art or drawing because of your brain surgery. Art/drawing is fantastic exercise for the brain, no matter how well you are at it. even if yr REALLY bad at it. Even if you draw a stick person, it's good for your brain. Also there is nothing cheaper than drawing, except running or biking (if you have a bike) which are also good options.

Yes check out Meetups in yr city too. (I'm too socially messed up for that right now but I've been.)

Lastly, I know someone that is 72 and she was bored so she started to learn Spanish, on her own! Brave soul that she is. Also she's listening to Spanish tutorials online for free. Amazing to learn a new language at that age!

I am so isolated... And no money (as in in the negative). I need to find something involving people. I took a couple things last fall but was so depressed I couldn't connect with anyone.

But you must check out Pinterest. If yr not on Pinterest, sign up. It's simple and costs nothing.

@ihateusernames you are right about the hours put in at work making me good at it. I never really thought of it that way for some reason but it makes sense. Understanding the why of things is so important to me and any learning keeps me going. Even though I'm still not sure what exactly to try I do know that my personality is not one to give up. I will work as hard and long as I need to to get myself to where I want to be. I can do that with a hobby too now that I kind of get the why.

@imok so sorry for what you had to go through. I graduated high school as the only person in my class without family or friends there so I can kind of relate with that. Your ideas are great and so practical for right now. I didn't know you could rent instruments! Definitely going to look into that. Also I forgot about a rosetta stone Spanish thing I bought a long time ago and never used. Maybe it's time to make that a priority. Thanks!

(Yeah. I never went to grad for two reasons. I knew family wouldn't buy me a dress and knew no one would go.)

I like to scrapbook because it A) passes the time, B) provides me with a beautiful & sentimental end result, and C) allows me to socialize - IF I feel like it. I like that there are no patterns - just a blank page that you fill up as you choose. If you're short on time there are even albums that are pre-made and all you do is pop your photos into the album. I prefer to scrap alone with some music on, but I have been known to invite like-minded friends over, which is nice because you can share tools and tips. There are even scrapbooking workshops where you bring your supplies and sit along other ladies (or men!) who felt like scrapping socially that day too.

Other than that I like to exercise, even if it's a walk outside. My mom takes a hula-hoop class, she's 60! Reading is nice, too.

Seems like a good site, so thought I would pop it in.

Let me know if it inspired you on anything.

My inexpensive hobby stuff:
*Cooking- (never hurts to learn new dishes nutritionally based, special diet or yummy)
*Learning a free & new software application for the phone, computer or to tweak work skills
*Exploring music, media, book stores, free parks to find new interest or add to taste
*Refinishing (freshen up some beat up stuff:clown:)
*knitting, (make a hat to cozy up a child at a cancer ward, friend or self)
*fly a kite
*buy bubbles in a jar and remember how to have fun, dreams and see colors instantly (I do it once a year or so for my inner child)
*sing on our song thread :whistling::hug:

~Keep searching for you to have a happy you;)

Echoing others...

ALL of them are appropriate.

If you wanted to be in the Olympics, yeah, you're behind the curve. But if you want to play for you??? Never too late. Knew a bloke who took up basketball after he lost his legs, cause he was always too afraid of looking stupid before, cause he'd never learned young.

Soccer is a good one. 90% of learning soccer (and the most fun playing, IMO) is on your own at home.

Yeah... Riding is damn expensive. If you have the time? You could be a 'working student'. Industry norms are 10 hours of stable chores a week for 1 hour of lessons. But some areas go as high as 20 hours. Shrug. Depends on the area.

If you're interested? Go for it. A soccer ball is $20. Grab one and roll it about your house as you do chores. Start learning your feet. :D

Have fun

What helped me was setting a budget and allocating some time. I didn't force myself to use either, but strongly encouraged myself.

Obviously it depends on your financials but eg $10 per week (or month) is a useful amount. With craft type items that lets you start almost anything, eg crochet hook and two balls of yarn.

I try to view that $10 as disposeable. Eg if I learn a little about crochet and next week want to try scrapbooking then that's fine, there is no need to be at all sensible etc with that $10, it is purely for entertainment.

Hope that helps.

Don't worry about not being good at something. Don't worry about being clueless about a potential hobby. Nobody ever starts a hobby and is perfect at it! And besides, half of the fun of some hobbies is improving your skills over time. (And if you started out being fabulous, how would the hobby grow? Not much, me thinks.)

These are some of my hobbies...

Gardening! Plants are pretty forgiving. It can be something you do on a small scale (think a few houseplants) or it can literally take over your entire backyard. Its all up to you! I started growing a garden about 6 years ago. It can take some work to get a backyard garden set up the first year, but after that, its a matter of maintenance. And let me tell you....I've got my gardening down to a minimal amount of work, LOL. It really does give you a sense of accomplishment to be able to say "Hey, I grew this!" And every year, its fun to branch out and grow different types of vegetables. Some people dream of designing their dream house. I dream of designing my dream backyard! Ahhhh, one day!

Collecting! I have so many different types of collections, it isn't even funny. I caught the collecting bug from my parents. And the great thing about collecting is that you can rotate your collections. Some things I will collect for a few years, then grow tired of it and sell it off. (I collect a variety of vintage things.) Its tons of fun to go out buying (thrift stores, antique stores, auctions, yard sales, etc). Other collections are ongoing and I've had for many years.

Cooking! I'm not the greatest cook, but I do love to cook and bake. I went gluten free a few years ago and I've had to re-learn how to cook so many different things. I became inspired by watching Master Chef Junior. I think "hey, if those kids can cook, *I* can cook!"

Art! I love to create things. I've done so many different types of art in the past. I sort of rotate through various types of creation, lol.

I think that half the fun of finding a hobby is just trying out different things and seeing what you like. You may try a number of things that you ultimately decide to not turn into a long term hobby. Some hobbies you only do every so often, some you may only do at certain times of the year, while other hobbies you do more regularly.

Another question that might help is .. Do you prefer gross motor, fine motor, or combination.

Personally i like fine motor. I like to get out my tub of latest craft project, sit on the lounge and fiddle (fine motor).

My husband is gross motor all the way. All his hobbies require large movements and very little sitting.

Aha, collecting! That's a good one @itsKismet ! It doesn't have to be much of an investment, either. For several years I collected tins- little candy tins, hot chocolate tins, small cookie tins, etc. They're typically only a couple of dollars- and you usually get some mints or something out of it. It's fun to have something to hunt for. If we had more room I'd still be buying them. My husband and his friends collect toys. He has the linen closet completely full of 80's GI Joes. That one isn't a very cheap hobby, though :(

I think definitely combination. Doing gross motor things helps me re center and get anxious tension out and fine motor is relaxing and intellectual which I like.
