Is A "Nervous Breakdown" Part Of PTSD?

Pam, you have a point with the term I chose. I just wasn't sure what other term to use than "nervous breakdown".

Whatever to call the episode, I'm paying a price of having to call for help with one, as well. I feel my family is treating me different, though it's probably just my own embarrassment about the meltdown day. And, the fact that I wonder if I lost what little self-confidence I had. Not sure how to get it back, if that makes any sense.

Thank you all for your posts! It does help me a lot!

I have had one adult meltdown that was related to extreme stress in a work situation that involved ethics violations in a research facility. I became the whistle blower and experienced a tremendous amount of retaliation and ostracism. I stayed on for another week under those conditions. The people at work who said terrible things to me stayed in my head all day and all night long for weeks. I couldn't eat or sleep. Eventually I melted to the floor and cried and moaned all day just to drown out the voices. I was okay after that but remain jaded, distrustful, and bitter about research after that experience.

I've had breakdowns yes, the last one got me the PTSD diagnosis and I have been working on it ever since. I agree, part of the trick is to learn to read the warning signs and back down once they start to happen - of course, this might not be possible all the time.
