Any opinions?
No, I don't think so. I mean, 43 years later and a 'part' came out that I was unfamiliar with, which my adoptive parents had thought 'died'. I think this is an old school thought pattern.

'Oh honey, that happened sooooooo long ago'.

I don't think it works like that. If the right situation comes up again she will be out, I know that now. I am co-conscious though. Maybe with DID it is different, but I doubt it.

For myself, I see parts through patterns in my life. If a pattern repeats, then I am pretty sure I am looking at a part that needs help. I see killing a part as similar to killing a traumatized version of myself. If I put that part under repeated stress (I want to kill you), then it (or a different part that has been traumatized) is going to come out more and that is never good.

DID is very confusing, I'll give you that! Losing an alter has never happened to me, but I know of someone who "lost" their host/main fronting alter. Not sure the part died though, maybe just retreated so far back into the subconscious they appeared to have vanished. Technically, I guess an alter can't die unless/until the body dies, as every alter is a brain state, or pattern of thoughts feelings and behaviours. Those thoughts and behaviours can be changed and integrated into a cohesive whole but the parts can't literally die.

Short answer; I don't think its possible to kill an alter.
