Woo - bagpipe.? I've never thought of that as calming.

I voted classical, and at the moment I'm mainly listening to piano and cello music. I like to try to focus on how the sounds are being made, or to visual patterns that describe the music

Rock, especially guitar heavy or with screaming...it helps release my tension and anger. I am also a die hard LP fan. In high school I could recant all the lyrics to all the songs of Hybrid Theory in order of track. I also love Disturbed. Saw them in concert and they are amazing!

I put other, pink , everclear, foo fighters, nirvana, on a horrible day I end up listening to hole, Id like to say classic rock.... but some of the songs on the radio stations that play it trigger memories i dont want. my husband listens to well everything.... and i feel wierd if a trigger song comes on even if its a good memory.

I've put 'other', because it depends what I'm needing to calm /from/. Different music, different states, same effect.
Rap/HH usually helps me with grief. Reminds me to get angry instead of complacent and while that's whole different bag of everything, 's an emotion I handle easier (as in know what to do with).

Depending upon the situation, I need different kinds of music. If I'm feeling depressed, I need something a bit bouncy (like Blue October's "Italian Radio"). If I'm too angry, I need something energetic that will let me burn out the anger (i.e., metal/rock). Sometimes I need Frank Sinatra or Frankie Valli, and sometimes I need Bach. The only sub-genres proven to irritate the everloving poo out of me are:

* "I'm hick and proud" country (i.e., "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson)
* "I've got/want money/drugs/street cred/fear/respect/cars/women/sex" rap/hip-hop (so, basically all of it, with very, very, very few exceptions)

I love instrumental music when I need to get 'me' balanced. Anything with words seems to distort, or interferes with absorbing the music. I love the string instruments and adore Celtic music.

Lullabies!

Yes, so you laugh, but I'm being COMPLETELY serious! I listen to the rock-a-bye lullaby tunes and yes, they knock me out! Who would have thought they work so well on adults? I honestly think this is the biggest insomniac secret that's completely out there in the open....as in duh, why would it only work on babies and not adults?!!?

It also depends on my mood, sometimes punk, other times country. But the one genre of music that almost always calms me down is reggae.
