HI! I am doing my best to find motivation everyday however it doesn't seem to be working very well. I feel alone and judged. I am trying to get through my first year of University however it seems to be getting harder and harder to find the motivation to eat and shower daily, never mind spend hours studying :S.. Any self motivation tip??

Hey and welcome,
I too have trouble in the area of motivation. I have found it very hard to enjoy things that I once was intrested in. I dread work where I use to enjoy it and I have to force myself to get things done. I have to remember that my PTSD is an ever changing process of recovery, I, simply put, I do the best I can with what I have at the moment. I would suggest working out as often as you can, start slow and work your way up to 5/6 days a week. It does wonders for the mind and body, I take this time for me and shut out all the problems along with anything negitive. It is'nt easy to get started but quickly it takes hold and the benifits show, both in sleep/rest and how my mind processes things, IE. I am much more calm.

Again welcome, Legend

Hello sweetgirl1175 welcome.

I am severely under motivated also, I have a stack of mail and papers next to my desk which need sorting and filing in the bin, its been there for months, growing bigger and bigger. I also get to crisis point with washing, house-work and things like cleaning my car. In regard to my car, I was seriously embarrassed just last week, I use the floor of the front passenger seat as a 'bin' and suddenly I needed immediate help from a auto-electrician. There was no way out, he opened the door and I felt like a total pig with all the rubbish on the floor. So, I got caught out then!

I find like others have suggested that exercise does seem to help but that has gone to the dogs for three weeks. I must not let another day go by for that.

Since I have not conquered my unmotivated behaviour, I cannot offer any sure fire ways to get over it.

Please remember, University is hard, especially when you have PTSD, so be kind to yourself.

You will not be judged here, No-one will condemn or criticise you. We all have issues and most have multiple issues.

I know getting up, showering and getting out the books or going to the campus feels overwhelming, I also have that problem when I have to go to the doctor, chemist or even a short bit of food shopping. When I am done and home again, all I want to do is get into bed. Some days I get up, feel too tired, ring and cancel whatever appointment I had, and go back to bed. I just cannot face the day. This especially happens when I have multiple things to get done. I was sent to a specialist for my fatigue but there was nothing to be done, he said I had to learn to live with it.

This Forum has a lot of information regarding PTSD, you are sure to feel better when you read at least some of the articles and information on the beginning of the site.

Best wishes

Wow. I have these same exact problems. It's crazy to talk to someone else who does the same thing as me. Well not crazy but shocking and nice.

"Fake it until you make it", stolen from the AA big book (from memory), but applicable for all that. We have been discussing motivation and exercise in group, some of the better ideas, tell someone you are going to go for a walk (then you have to be accountable if you don't), start off downhill, then you have to walk back, focus on the journey, not how you feel, to start with... As for study, I struggle with it too, I actually disassociate to the point that I write crap and I cannot see the problem until I get better, so I go up and down with output and ratings. Tell your school the problem, get them to understand the issues, then seek support when things are going wrong.

Welcome to the forum:)
