hehe I had the string mitts too. You actually run them through the sleeves and across your back and down the other sleeve inside the jacket. I used to have to dive into our elementary school's lost and found box for my stuff because I lost so many things. It didn't help that the box was only about a foot shorter than I was, so I had to actually get into it to find my stuff (I was very short).
My mother is one of my early trauma sources. It was rough as a child, but I'm dealing with the effects now. She doesn't bother me as much because I've progressed to the point where it's hard for her to trigger me herself-but all the things she did are still there. I'm working on it.
I don't know if I go on my autopilot because I find it boring or because of things when I was younger and trying to block things out while still attending to various tasks. I don't think I'll ever know.
Regardless, losing things seems pretty usual, irritating, but pretty common among us :P
