I stood up for myself against a bullying employee for the first time today.

She was on the phone complaining to a competitor about her place of employment and asked if they had any openings.
I told her in a calm manner that her comments make it sound like I am a bad manager, which I don't appreciate. I then told her that if she doesn't like working for us, she is welcome to go find work wherever she chooses.

She got angry and is very prideful so she might quit because of it, but I feel like I was justified in my actions.

Well done for standing up for yourself! I know it is a really hard thing to do.
If she does quit, yes it is a pain to find a new employee but you will most likely find someone who is more deserving of the job!
She got angry because she most likely isn't used to you standing up to her and was surprised.

Feel proud that you stood up for yourself :)

I hope you get a good chuckle if she blames quitting on getting busted for bad mouthing the company to interested parties, while already looking for other work on company time, as she was clearly planning on quitting long in advance of getting caught.

She sounds like a brain donor.

Yes, I see you're in the U.S.... document it! Also any other incidents. Look carefully at your company's misbehavior-related rules, too.

Is there a Human Resources person at your company? Possibly get guidelines from them? Maybe other folks here can comment on whether that's a good idea... I'm not an expert.

Good for you for standing up to this bullying idiot! Reasonable people would never do what she's done and expect to keep a job... but she may be good at making it seem like she's the victim while bullying -- lots are -- so document... cross your "T"s and dot your "i"s very carefully...

If you're the boss, I would start looking for another employee right now. She doesn't want to be there, you -are- in charge; can her for insubordination.. Hell, if it's a "Right to Work" state, you can kick her out the door anytime for any reason, or no reason at all.

Good going. :)

Well done for standing up and calling the bully out. From your description, your work place is about to get one step closer to being an arsehole free environment.

Have you ever read the book "The No Asshole Rule"?
It even has a guide to surviving arsehole infested environments.
