Abstract

Managed a potentially triggering one about 18 months ago and it went really well. Left me feeling more resilient after, once I recovered. Am about to do another different one and the preparation isn't terribly helpful either. I'm in that stage. I know this is a bit obscure but wondered if anyone has any practical advice or sensible sharings of what helped them in different situations. Matter of fact is absolutely fine as is general observations or personal experiences. Thank you.

If you’re awake and aware...There is only one procedure that I know of on the planet that you can’t stand up and walk out of the room when you’ve had enough... so unless you’re having your skull bolted to a chair with several screws? You’re in control.

Doesn’t mean leavin won’t be awkward or argued, but it’s quite liberating to realize consent can be revoked at any time.

I don't know if it's applicable to your situation or not, but I'm seconding what @Friday said. The only way I can ever convince myself it's ok to see a doctor is by reminding myself that I'm an adult, I have free will, and I can escape any time I want to.

Having a some scripts helps me. I don't communicate well once I'm there so if I have thought out what I am going to say in advance it helps. Like I will have a script of general questions, a script for "this hurts can you <insert whatever is needed>" and a "stop this" script.

I also tend to slip something into my pocket to ground me. And if I end up and that wonderful outfit and can't have it, I still know it's near and can focus on it. I also have a plan for other grounding exercises i can do while there. And a plan for what to do with myself after.

Thank you so much @Friday @scout86 and @Muttly all very helpful solid thoughts. Am going to sit and think on them for a bit. I do have a real sense of having more ability to avoid freezing up verbally and physically more recently and that is a massive help.

I think I also need to do lots of grounding starting now to deal with triggering physical stuff. Almost prefer it if it is worse but short rather than there being long pre stuff going on.

If it helps any... You freezing up may surprise the doctors. :) As in take them a while to figure out what is going on, so that may be seen as added control, not lesser (because they would have to pause what they are doing, and you are gaining time... while already counting with that reaction, in advance.).

Thank you @Ronin Appreciate it. I wish I could say that has always been the case in the past but sadly I can't!

Thanks again everyone. I actually did well all considered. I used all things suggested by you too. I find feeling I have a choice very nb. And muttly, those ideas are excllent. Have used some before and it reminded me and reinforced a plan for me. I used to have truly terrible problems speaking and freezing in these situations.

May still be more after shocks but I am trying to concentrate on noticing the positives and giving myself credit. grrr. All is good. I can let this be noted in my brain as a win and part of a further journey,
