I’m just curious as to whether or not others have found benefit to taking methylfolate?

I only have a single mutation to the MTHFR gene.

I was skeptical at first, which is part of the reason I didn’t start taking it until a year after my genetic test.

I’m having difficulty determining what med or supplement is providing what benefit. However, I do believe that I’m having benefits beyond the increase of my psych meds, as in the benefits are different than what is to be expected with that medication.

I started at 15mg, and by some stroke of luck didn’t have any side effects. I’ve been reading up on it and have found that upwards of 90% of people have side effects on this stuff. I’ve been on it for a few weeks now.

After a few weeks you are probably good. You most likely weren't deficient in minerals nor did you have inflammation, fybromyalgia or elevated c-reactive protein. You also must not be eating things that are fortified with folic acid which is a huge no no!

A single mutation reduces your bodies ability to use follate by 60% vs 80% with a double mutation, so still pretty serious, but it looks like you have to treat certain other conditions first. This is fairly new information to me.

Ok, so word to the wise, do NOT start out at 15mg. This is mega-dosing your system! Really, there isn’t a whole lot of evidence, from what I can find, for starting at this dose. In fact, I’ve read about people doing well on much smaller doses. As with anything, there is no harm in titrating up. (My hospital doc said to start at 15mg.)

So, yeah.....after two weeks on 15mg, my system freaked, high blood pressure and pulse. It was a Saturday night, and you pretty much have to club me over the head to get me into an ER on a Saturday night. I wasn’t up for sitting in the waiting room for three hours. I knocked myself out for the night. I woke up feeling a little better, but not able to do much before feeling exhausted.

It’s Tuesday and I’m still not back to normal. I’m waiting for it to get out of my system so I can start on the lowest dose. Because yeah, THE STUFF WORKS. If I wasn’t feeling so much better mentally, I’d never touch the stuff again. I ordered off of Amazon and my package is “lost”, which is just as well as I can’t take the stuff for awhile.

Eve, are you taking a prescribed one from doc or OTC supplement. I was at the vitamin store and there are several kinds available such as 5.10 THF which kinda confused me because it did not have the M.

Thanks for sharing your experience with 15mg too. I gonna give this a shot. I started NAC last week in hope to help my TBI recovery and reduce nerve pains.

I found this link about fruits and veggies folate being affected by storage:

Folates in fruit and vegetables: contents, processing and stability.

I got supplement today 5MTHF calcium salt and it is 1000mcg.

Will try daily and see what happens but i am also starting ALA 250mg too after reading another post.
