Muscle Rolling

Just wondering if anyone else does muscle rolling...?

It’s been well known in the fitness world for awhile now, but more recently it’s gone mainstream.

I started doing it a few months ago for muscle tension, using a nubby foam roller. A few days ago I expanded and bought three more types of rollers, one a smooth foam roller, and two hand held rollers.

I must say, the effect that muscle rolling has on my body is AMAZING. I hold much of my stress/tension in my shoulders and back. Sometimes it’s so bad that it feels like my nerves are on fire. Muscle rolling calms my nerves down to the point where I don’t feel any of this physical anxiety anymore. I can actually sleep!

It was originally thought that muscle rolling was just a way of prepping for a workout or soothing muscles after a workout, but researchers are finding that it has an effect on the nervous system and can have a calming effect on the body.

It’s pretty interesting stuff! I don’t know exactly how it works, but I know it works for me.

I know that a lot of us hold tension in our muscles so that’s why I thought I’d start this thread on muscle rolling and how it has benefited me. I’m making it a part of my daily routine.

Rollers aren’t that expensive, and for me it was worth spending some money to see if they’d help me. My cheapest roller was about $10 and the most expensive was $20. I bought them off of Amazon. So much more beneficial than many of the other much more expensive things I’ve tried! Lol.

My massage therapist has mentioned this but I've never gotten around to it.
I'm off to amazon!

Just go slowly at first! I think I overdid it last night with one of my newer rollers, lol. But, I rather deal with some muscle soreness over my “electric” nerves, any day!

There’s tons of info out there on how to do muscle rolling, videos, etc.

I prefer the smooth foam roller to the nubby foam roller. It seems like the smooth one has a better effect on my muscles. And, the nubby one bruised me. It looked like I had tire tracks on my back, lol. I asked my sister about it and she says the same thing happens to her husband when he uses the nubby one on his back.

I've found it great for the upper back, but not so great for the lower back.

Very true!

I’ve read that it’s good for the upper back, but don’t go down below the bottom of the rib cage. It has something to do with how the spine has more protection on your upper back, but not as much on your lower back. I can’t remember the exact wording, but it’s something like this.

Oh:) believe it or not, I am a personal trainer and nutrition coach..yeah I know. Even pts have ptsd. hehe.
But on the subject of foam rolling...I would be lost without it. The reason you should not foam roll your lower back is because our lower spines lack the strength to support that. A lot of lower back pain comes from tight quads....think of it this way...our bodies work in opposing groups- so lower back to quads. If you have tight quads, it pulls on the lower back like a string. So I advise my clients to roll their quads if they have lower back pain.

I went to a class on rolling and it was incredibly painful for me, all over. But perhaps I'm doing it wrong. @Druidcat, you bring up an excellent point about the lower back and also about opposing muscle groups. Maybe I'll give it another try.

How long were you trying to roll each muscle group? Did you try to take it slowly? What kind of roller did you use?

I still find it painful to roll anything but my upper back because my muscles are so tense. (It’s a hurts so good kind of pain.) But, I do know that it works because my nerves have calmed down. I’m now focusing on my upper arms as well, which are tight.
