Need Help. Waking Up With Leg Cramps

Update on the cramps...

I have been using a fleece round my legs to help take away some of the tension and stop these cramps. It has worked a wee bit, particularly if I havent been so restless. If I have been tossing and turning I just end up getting tangled and uncomfy. I have been using also to have a sleep on the sofa in the afternoon if I havent slept for a night or two, I find sleeping on the sofa restricts the amount I can move and often get better joy there.

Freakofnurture....cheers!!

Yes it is because I am getting more sleep than I used to with less cramps...just need to find something to get rid of the last bit :)

Have you tried taking magnesium and calcium tablets? I found this helps stop the cramps during the night. Also make sure you have enough salt in your diet as well. Too much or too little can also effect the cramps.

One to try and will get back to you...how long does it take to take affect?

I have a physical therapy student here. These are her recommendations.

Sleep with pillow between your legs, if that is not triggering to you. When you wake up in spasm, lie on your back with your knees bent and you feet planted on the bed. Then let your knees fall from side to side. Your feet do not stay planted for this movement and that is ok.

Start by holding your knees like that for three seconds on each side, and then as it hurts less on each side, hold for longer on each side.

After that, if you still feel tense, go into butterfly sitting, where the soles of the feet are touching and are close to you and rest you hands on top of your knees. Gradually, as slowly as you want, put a little pressure on your knees. You should feel a deeper stretch.

Questions are :

What position are you waking up in?

What are you doing to help relieve the pressure?

Has anything been effective?

thanks for the update, I'm yet to try it but need to. I am a lover of bananas but no so keen on milk...got to give it a go though! :-)

I had the worst leg cramps to the point one cramp on my left calf was so violent it threw my leg over the side of the bed causing my whole body to fall to the floor. I tried everything you all are mentioning. It was only when I stopped eating red cattle meat and taking a combination of MSM & Potassium Gluconate that the crams have subsided to nearly none. I eat all the chicken, lamb, fish and pork I want now. I tested this a couple of times, believe me, for me, it was an enzyme or something or other in the red meat causing me the cramps, I read about that too. I hope this helps others as well. Please let others know if it works for you.
