Hello,

Almost 2 years ago I was physically and sexually assaulted by my boyfriend at the time... It was life threatening. My initial emotional reaction was to feel numb, I was in shock and allowed him to stay in my life (which I'm now ashamed to admit). I've been diagnosed with anxiety in the past, and needless to say this was a major trigger for me. It took a while to set in fully but the impacts of this have made it really difficult to function. Among other things I can't handle being in crowds, experience unexpected crying, etc. I know some people are able to process these things and move on quickly, but I still don't feel like the same person.

The abuse in the relationship continued sporadically and I've finally ended things with him fully but only after experiencing a "rock bottom" in my depression. Not sure if it's PTSD from the initial incident or due to the prolonged situation but I know I need to get into therapy and start processing things the right way..

It sounds like you are ready to take control of your symptoms. Congratulations for getting out of an abusive relationship. Thats amazing start to your recovery. Welcome to the community.

Hi Mango, so sorry for what you've been through. I'm glad you found this place and that you are going into therapy.

@mango Welcome to the forum!

There is no need to feel ashamed for staying with someone, as this is a common occurrence with women who experience domestic violence. Its pretty normal when your life is threatened to do what you have to in order to stay safe. Be proud of yourself for getting out of the relationship as that takes a lot of courage.

You may want to seek the services of a therapist that specializes in trauma. Regardless whether or not you have PTSD, you have experienced a significant trauma and deserve the best help that you can find.
