I just got a call from my doctor. I have abnormal squamous cells and she recommends a colposcopy. I am waiting for a call for the referral to the gynecologist. I am scared to death. I know this is common but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this and how did you cope? Going to the gynecologist is a huge trigger for me so this does not help at all...OMG...one more thing to worry about!

I've had it and my oldest daughter had it. On the scale there's normal and about five or six levels or not-normal ending in cervical cancer. My daughter had a colposcopy and I had cryosurgery (freeze the cells and about six layers under them). Both of us had good paps afterwards and since.

Yes, it's scary (and PTSD doesn't help one bit)...but like you said, it's common and the procedure is done all the time. It's to prevent the cells from going to the end of the scale and cervical cancer. It's good that they caught this and can treat this while it's still minor. Keep that in mind. It's a good thing and is helping your health.

Hang in there, hon.

I too had the same thing that Marlene had done. Mine was done in my mid 20's, and everything turned out fine, and mine was class 3 I was told, and if I had let it go another 2-4 weeks, I would have needed a complete hysterectomy..... My daughter also had the same thing in her late 20's and she is fine also.... The Cryosurgery can be a bit uncomfortable, as they freeze the shit out of you, but it will be ok.

Hang in there hon, and you know where I am if you need to call. Do something calming ok.......

I too had an abnormal result about 7 years ago Pandora.

As my GP explained it to me, on a scale of 1-10 mine was about 1/2. An outpatient appointment was requested while it was still at this stage, for it to be dealt with and sorted. A few weeks later off I went for the appointment which was booked for 2.45 pm on the day arranged.

I could not believe how quick it was, in at 2.45, back out, done, finished and on my way home by 3.15pm. No need to go back, just keep up with checks.

Every thing has been fine since, worth dealing with now Pandora. Hard I know, maybe a good friend could go with you, hold your hand type of friend. They will look after you I'm sure, don't leave it though, better now when its easier for them, than later when it could be so much harder for you.

I too had an abnormal one years ago. It was pretty minor I guess and we decided to do it again to check it and it came back fine. So I didn't have to go through all the stuff the member's above did.

Hang in there Pandy. I use dissociation to the max when I'm in situations like that. I really truly just disappear. Try not to think about it too much. Tell yourself that everything will be fine and know that we are hear for you to freak out to if you need to.

Thanx guys.....One day at a time and I just need to deal with it! It really is a pain in the but though...no pun intended.

Ya..hopefully I will disasociate. I have a good friend that already said she would come with me, I took her to hers about three years ago.

How long did the procedure last? Do they give you pain meds...well I have my own for my back and will take extra that day, along with ativan for sure....It is fairly quick right????? Not too horribly uncomfortable? The support I get here is invaluable...thanx again guys. This actually helped to read other stories. It is quite common...days like this I wish I was born a man...LOL.

I had an abnormal pap and subsequent colposcopy at the beginning of my pregnancy with my daughter. I too was pretty freaked out but it ultimately wasn't much worse than a basic gyn exam and pap. With my (then) husband by my side and a sufficient amount of dissociation I made it through. If you made it through the pap you can make it through this, too.

I can't remember back that long ago, but it wasn't bad, just uncomfortable. I doubt you will need anything other that your patch that you normally wear. i think I was there maybe an hour at the most. It's done to thousands of women everyday, very simple procedure....Just try to be calm and hang in there. This is one time that dissociating is OK...Go for it.. LOL!!!!!

Thanx cat and She, actually when I had my pap two weeks ago I was wearing my patch and had taken breakthrough pain meds as well and was amazed at how much it did not hurt, hardly felt it at all. So...you guys are making me feel better, I guess this is the one time that I will be thankful that I am dependant on opiates and dissasociate in really high stress periods of time! LOL...How crazy is that? Geez!

I understand that, Pandora. Sometimes the dissociation really is a gift, and if it gets you through a stressful time, there's nothing wrong with it.

I hope everything comes out okay or you.

Sending positive thoughts, and hoping everything works out for you. It sounds like others have been through this, and had it turn out ok, which gives you every reason to hope for a good outcome.
