Pics Of Our Dogs

OK, guys. I've got to come clean and ask this, cause I've asked my friends and get different answers. I've been diagnosed with Non-small cell cancer and my records were sent today over to a Oncologist. Since my Doxie died last July, I've been dying for furry companionship. I'm going to try to get a ball park drop dead date and if not too short, get another dog.

It may be that the dog may wind up very old and me gone.

Should I adopt?

Yes, get an older dog *if* there is someone to take dog in after you're gone. (sorry to be so blunt)
If you can take care of another dog for a year or more then you saved that dog from a terrible fate.
Let dog get used to the person who will take it in later on so the transition is not such a shock.
Above all, enjoy the love and companionship a dog brings to you.

Damn straight. & if they only give you 6 months? Foster. Love is too precious to go wanting. & You're solid. You'll sort the logistics.

@Sarg, there are older dogs that need a good loving home. You can call around to the shelters in your area and specifically requesting a dog of a certain age. Most shelters have a hard time adopting out older dogs and they are usually very helpful when someone wants one.

Yeah, Lurch, there's a Doxie mix at a shelter in another town not far away. I've already called them and discussed my cancer and they said there was no bar to adoption. He's five and I've been talking to folks that have my condition and dependent upon what stage I'm at I might squeeze out five years. Then, take the actions necessary for his better interest. But! I have to find out what stage I'm at.

Thank you for the responses, they helped.

Go for it Sarg....

Here is a pic of Special...She was owned by a Nam Vet that liven next to my daughter. My daughter and him became friends and I talked with him a few times....He was a drinker and I believe had bad PTSD. Long story short, he got sick and found he had liver cancer and was given about 4 weeks....He was concerned about his dog Special as she was blind and deaf, was about 16 years old. My daughter told him that my wife and I would take her in when the time came,(she had asked us) as her Dad was a Nam vet as well. So 3 weeks later we had Special....This old dog had the right name, as she acted like she was 7 or 8 and would jump up and down a good foot in the air. She would pull you down the drive when you took her for a walk. :) We had her for almost 2 years, she was about 18 when she went to sleep.....Would we do that again? Yes, in a heart beat, we still miss her........

Sarg, you know, just like the rest of us, our furry companions are the closest things we have to a battle buddie. Get another pooch brother. :)

Sarg, it looks as if you have given this a good hard look. Go for it!!!

Being someone who has greatly benefited by "The Grace of God" not once but twice (prostate and esophageal cancer) also knows the doubt that acts as a hurdle with life's decisions. The constant projection that goes along with it is paralysing, everything has a *but what if* attached to it. That SUCKS!!

The pooch is a good thing! I could not do dogs (wifes allergic) But a big fat kitty or two filed the bill just a well. It's about the unconditional love provided - not the recipient. I lost both my pals with in 11 months of each other and it been about two years. Being the self-centered SOB that I am I convinced myself that I could not go through that loss again and decided not to have any more critters. The wife and I getting to the point we need someone else to holler at so I think we're getting close. Besides we have just about seen all the YouTube kitty-stuff out there (lol). We never owned a critter that didn't need a home as they were all ferals.

Its about giving them what they need in return for immeasurable loyalty, laughs and comfort. The medical community is just beginning to figure out what our Creator, their Creator had built into the design specs.

Win-Win big time.
