Positive affirmations on the job

I'm working various things related to my employment goals... I'm physically shaking and sick to my stomach with anxiety.

My brain is screaming at me: YOU WILL FAIL. DANGER.

Thanks ptsd brain. This extreme panic is really not needed right now. Ugh.

What are positive affirmations you use to challenge distorted thoughts while on the job? I need to find some more to use.

It might be specific to the things your brain decides to freak out about. For example, on the failure= danger thing, I'd pick that apart and decide how accurate it actually is in the present situation. not a catchy mantra, I know, but I find it works. I more trend to go with combining the idea that I might be 'wrong' with a certain amount of panic. So I explore the facts and try to accurately decide if I'm really going to die if I make a mistake. (Usually not.) The same thing with failure. It might, sometimes, be dangerous. It's also an opportunity to learn and to improve going forward. The man who sold me my first horse used to say, "you have to fall off a thousand times before you learn to ride." When one the kids he mentored fell off, he'd yell, "only 999 times go!" 'Failure' was just an acceptable part the process.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Do I trust myself enough to handle the consequences if I fail?
Yes. Outstanding. Let's do that then.
No. Brilliant. Let's build some <gak> :wtf: trust.

Don't be afraid. Let's have some fun, instead! :sneaky:

One of the mottoes that Diego Rodriguez and I use at the Stanford d.school is “failure sucks, but instructs.” We encourage students to learn from the constant stream of small setbacks and successes that are produced by doing things (rather than just talking about what to do). Learning from Success and Failure

To paraphrase our d.school founder and inspiration David Kelley: “If you keep making the same mistakes again and again, you aren’t learning anything. If you keep making new and different mistakes, that means you are doing new things and learning new things.”

When panic and inner-critics are running wild for me, I tend to pause and try to unpick "what is true about that?" and what is the lie (maybe plural lies) in that?" Being able to recognise the truth and the lies in the stories we tell ourselves can be very helpful - and useful in calming anxiety.

I've never tried affirmations so I may be well off-beam here but I guess you could say things like:

Today is going to be a good day.
I am strong.
I am good at my job.
I am safe.
It's ok if I make a mistake - I will not fail, I will succeed or learn.

How are you feeling about it now?
