I have been taking 3mg at night to help combat ptsd related nightmares. I also am allowed to take 3mg more up to 3 times a day for anxiety. I have had some issues with sleep for some time. Recently I started to have dreams while being awake. I thought I was going mad and I started to research my drugs (related to sludge and his help with med's) to figure out what out of the 17 different medications I am on would be causing this.
Bingo would you believe its a side effect of Praosin? Well it is. And this was starting to become a major issue with me. its pretty rough dealing with the ptsd alone but to have your meds start making you relive nightmares even while awake was a bit much.
Now comes the kicker... to change med's and deal with something else or cope with the dreams? Crazy stuff. I am left wondering if anyone else has had this issue? What came of it? did you change meds and if so to what? I still have to get my doctor to change me over from the conflicting saphris/citalopram issue already. sigh.

I know you don`t have many options where you are Red cocker, but I realy recommend you look into Natural Health options.

Lab Meds suck, and I can vouch for the Hokus Pokus world of mother nature and TCM. I lost count of how many meds I was on a few years back and am better for getting off them.

I realy hope you find something.

Can`t say I like watching you suffer brother. You are one of the others and I know you know it.

Not much I can offer Dan, but I will say that Citalopram has been the good guy for me, when it comes to the push. Allows me to do everything I want, including sleep no nightmares. Still get weird dreams, though, but only during 'normal' sleep.
On the natural side, a lot of the standard diet/herbal works (really), as does a sensible amount of phys and good pre-sleep routine. I know you've had a few battles recently and I'm sure that's a contributor. Hope you can pull out of the line for a while.

Have had sleep issues since I got back. Took the wrong road and relied upon alcohol to put me out. Now I don't drink that much anymore, sleep issues are back. Keep trying, there has to be some combo that works and you're being smart about it and checking all the conflicts.

I get hard-core sarcastic on the holistic/snake oil/ new age bullshit stuff as many here know. Truth is I believe that if something helps one, then it is worth trying. Angle is living proof that for some, alternative methods work just as well if not better than modern ones, and I think that is just the sort of shit we science types need to investigate in depth before we sneer and discount.I'm living proof that you should only trust valid science and make your Doc earn his paycheck when treating you.

Science says acupuncture is bullshit, but I have personally seen it work wonders for certain folks. Same thing for pot. hypnosis, hoodoo crystal therapy, and even religion. I may be a science asshole, but when it comes to combat PTSD, I say if it works for one, then it is worth trying for others. We each need different treatments because we are each different.

For me the crazy sounding bit about filtering out blue light with yellow, orange or blu-blocker type lenses did the trick. Even the night terrors are subsiding. Nightmares interrupt REM sleep. Night Terrors interrupt phase 4 sleep. Turns out that if your REM is fubar, your phase 4 goes to hell.

Be careful with Prazosin. If you are actually having nightmares- great. There is proof it works for that even though it is off label. If you are having night terrors, something very different from nightmares, you may want to talk with your Doc, unless you have high blood pressure also. If you are in the US, this is off-label use for the drug which should always be questioned.

(See related posts on these forums about Drugs, Sleep and alternatives to the bag of pills method. Then talk with your Doc.)

Gimme a list of what you are on, and I'll do the research for you. I need to do some science to help keep it together right now.

I haven't researched it but I've heard that many modern medical medications had origins in Native American "folk remedies". I tried some alternative meds but didn't notice the subtle effect. Guess I'm the type that has to be clobbered over the head to notice if it's working or not.

What ever floats your boat.
