Rules Warning System Discussion

Does anyone else think the temporary "Banned" avatar is reminiscent of a rubber stamp? It makes me think of the "Rejected" rubber stamp that those of us in the engineering and design fields dread.

This site is a great accomplishment and has helped me in many many ways, my ONLY reservation is in the tone of my own warnings and the perceived harshness of seeing a rubber stamp avatar letting everyone know that the person is guilty of some unknown transgression.

Could I suggest something more whimsical possibly? How about inverting the avatar temporarily?

Thanks Whitney, I wasn't aware this could be done. I'm not the most tech savvy person in the world. Computers piss me off on a regular occasion.

The navigation "Help" section is quite comprehensive nowadays, from the novice to not knowing what a forum is, through to advanced forum features.

There isn't much not mentioned in that section now.

@just me here, the banned avatar remains as is, because the one issue people have had is not knowing who is banned, including staff. How a person takes it is really up to them. It doesn't matter what the forum does, someone will have an issue with it. History has dictated this time and time again.

It is your forum and I am just an unpaid user, but I will be bold enough to question the statement I quoted from your post.

There are many other forums out there that have no order or management and this site stands out as a model of courtesy and respect for one another, due in part to the rules and the enforcement, also probably to the majority of users being female and a median age that I would bet is over 25. I doubt that issues arise over everything the forum does, I think most of us appreciate the order and lack of rude posts or anything like the "trolling" I see on other forums.

I would also be willing to bet that if a vote were taken, the word "banned" wouldn't be used, and the rubber stamp avatar would be voted down too.

Do as you want, you don't even need to explain yourself. I am taking advantage of what feels like a pretty open forum, I hope you will accept my opinions as just opinions and not as anything near a strong feeling or hard judgement. I truly do beleive you run one of the best sites I have ever spent time on, I hope you will take my opinion as just a suggestion for improving it.

I appreciate the avatar change for that very reason. It was very confusing before to just see "Profile not available" With that, you could assume that the profile was just made private. This makes it easier.

Thank you for your input. I believe this forum is what you say and yes you can share your opinion. I am also a firm believer that if you feel something is inappropriate, not working correctly etc, that it is good to also come up with an alternative rather than just point out something which doesn't sit right with you.

What avatar would you suggest remembering it is solely to identify those members who have joined and have been banned - 95% of which are either spammers or trolls? There are very few actual 'real' members who have been banned over the 5 years I have been here.

Would it be possible to put the information about the warning, points, their expiration, etc into the forum rules or somewhere where people can find all of the information on one place?

LOL my unobservant-ness strikes again!! I thought it was odd that this post was in the chit chat section ..and now I see the link to the announcements. Funny, I was just telling someone that there were so many things I was wondering about and afraid to ask..and then noticed it's all in announcements. Apparently so is this. My mistake and thank you :)
