Sex Offender As Therapist?!

If they bring him on as a professor and he gains tenure, then they essentially won't be able to get rid of him unless he commits a crime.
Wouldn't happen. I don't know of a university in the US that doesn't check this; and, if for some reason they miss it, it's a pretty standard part of the exit clause - whether you have committed a felony in the past, or post-award.
If they bring him on as just an associate at first but never move him into a tenure track (perhaps in order to decrease their liability as per above) he might claim foul and sue them for discrimination.
Nope. If he allows them to hire him as an associate, he is forgoing his ability to transfer to a tenure-track. These two hiring lines are generally completely separate, anyway.
He claims his current university thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread. If so, just why aren't they offering him a position and/or endorsing him for positions elsewhere?
Either they don't have jobs (most likely), or they can't hire felons (also likely). Educating them is different from hiring them.
On top of all of this, I feel guilty. I was the one who reported him to the licensing board. I finked on him. Now he is homeless and entering into unemployment. I understand that he must take responsiblity for his poor choices and criminal background, but I still feel guilty.
You really need to stop feeling guilty. You made a choice. I'm going to be very black and white about it for a moment, so bear with me - but, either you believe that rehabilitation is possible, or you don't. And if you don't, then you do what you need to do according to your moral compass. It wasn't up to you, whether these institutions acted on the info you gave them. It was up to them.

I sincerely encourage you to close the book on this, and allow yourself to move on. Probably doesn't help that the thread keeps staying alive...

Educating them is different from hiring them.

They hired him as a student employee. They allowed him to teach an undergraduate psych course for several semesters, TA, do research, and serve as a career counselor - all for pay.

Apparently, this is one reason why he believes he is employable.

The only way to truly close the book is to shut my mother totally out of my life. She is the link between my brother and myself.

This thread is the only place I have to talk about all of this, so it is important that I have this space until I no longer need it.

Have you tried the OVC Directory of Crime Victim Services? It's a national directory, and it has a lot of organizations that provide legal advice. Once you search, they have the county that they are in. I think it would be worth giving it a try, especially when it comes to finding your brother's court records. That sort of thing seems to usually be easier when you can do it in person.

I haven't been around long enough to post links, but it's the first listing that comes up when you google it.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply it should be closed; I was only being aware that you had posted earlier about feeling more able to close the book, so to speak, and was feeling badly that it was a book that kept re-opening. Bad analogy, but hopefully you get the idea. There's absolutely no need to close the thread.

Maybe, just MAYBE, he is employable as a researcher or a professor.

If he goes into research, w...

I'm out and about and even with glasses I dont do so well on a small screen, so from what I can catch in a 5 inch blurr here is that he wants to be a professor.

I can only really guess from familiarity with CA, OR and WA in general I think his possibilities for teaching employment with adults, university level, would be based on appealing to the board of the individual school with his story and records indicating the special circumstances that make him no risk.

In his case it would be something lack very bad judgement in a mutual but criminally inappropriate relationship with a step daughter. Thats a candidate for review in my opinion. Its not the same as having to explain why you exposed yourself in playgrounds compulsively or whatever.

The problem is that he did a lot of time for a relationship crime, you haven't seen the court paperwork just the charges. It may not be that hard to get, it may be something a potential employer can get a hold of, they may demand to see it.

I suspect its a much uglier story than he will voluntarily disclose.

The other thing is that research, research assistant, and more glaringly suspicious of him not to be pursuing, the " I want to counsel sex offenders like myself to help them recover and not re-offend " category. Which really is the only job he should be looking for, and the only one that makes his degree choice make sense.

Just about every job in the country requires a degree to be considered for nowadays. His degree would put him at the top of the list for manager at Office Max.

When I say he is employable with his degree, more specifically, that is what I meant. A masters in psychology can get you a human resources position at the mall.

It does seem to me that you're taking on a lot of personal responsibility for what he may do in the future. I understand completely, but just keeping an eye on him and stepping in through legal channels if you get a feeling things are wrong, is about all you can do. You are not your brothers keeper, my friend.

I also have a relative that has done horrific things and gotten away with it, they are also in a position of trust with the public, I understand.

Hi Nessa,

This is very helpful information, and I thank you. I'll put this in a safe place.

Right now, I've pretty much done everything I can about my brother. No one is in danger at the moment - there are no kids involved, for instance - rather it's just all very unpleasant right now.

Really, the big question right now is how to kick him out of my life while not totally rejecting my mother. He has this strange way of trying to control me through my mother - very difficult.

But I will definitely hang on to this information, in case he starts crossing boundaries again. Fortunately, given the registry, it's easy to keep track of him.

Thanks so much!

Ben

Oh yes. For one, his step daughter was a minor, not an adult as he told our family. Just touching the surface, here.

Which really is the only job he should be looking for, and the only one that makes his degree choice make sense.

Yes, I agree. If he really has healed, kudos, and let him be restricted to working with sex offenders.

. A masters in psychology can get you a human resources position at the mall.

And that would be a great job for him. He's always been excellent at any business-related position.

Regarding taking responsibility, not really. I had nothing to do with him after he got out of prison, but then suddenly he ended up with a private practice and I had to take action. All I really had to do was contact the appropriate authorities, and then they did all the work. And I haven't had to do anything else since that time.

Hopefully, he won't cross boundaries again and I will never need to take action again.

The hard part now is all the dysfunctional family stuff. Plus, the fact that my own chosen profession (before I abandoned it) lacks integrity.

What was your ethically dubious former career?

I was in graduate school studying psychology.

Don't laugh.

When I lost respect for the profession, I abandoned the field and went into mathematics. That was years ago. I've been a happy math teacher ever since.

Are you still laughing?

Ben

It must have really gotten under your skin to make you run without out stopping until you hit.....math. :hilarious:

Funny thing. I realized, over time, that the clinical professors and therapists I knew were ... well ... not healthy mentors. Yet, the math department people were so relaxed. Emotionally healthy, even.
