Mr B

New Here
Recently I've been shaking continuously ranging from very small shakes that would be undetectable to other people to shakes where my arms and legs are all uncontrollable, the only think that helps calm me down a bit is lots and lots of alcohol. I'm trying my upmost best to get of the alcohol because I'm at a stage now where I'm an alcoholic.

Does anyone have any tips on calming these shakes?

Thanks.

Hi Mr B and welcome to the forum.

My view - and experience - is that shaking in itself is a good thing. I explained what I mean by that in another thread about shaking, here:

If you're feeling anxiety or panic, then that's slightly different. The shaking would be a symptom, and again I see it as a healthy release of what you're holding inside, but it's the anxiety or panic you would need to deal with. It's like if I'm depressed and crying, pressing tissues against my eyes to stop the tears coming out isn't going to make me feel less depressed.

Blocking with alcohol is not a good idea but you already know that, right? The best thing is first to develop your grounding and coping skills and then to try to process and move through the effects of trauma.

Do you see a therapist? Do you think that would be right for you?

I have one friend from group who's tremors are so bad he picked up the nickname "Shaky Jake.". Mine aren't quite as bad as his, but I've had tremors as one of my PTSD symptoms since 1968. Mine haven't gone away. They get worse under stress and around certain anniversaries. They, like any PTSD symptom, get worse if I try to fight them or stuff them. When they appear, I just remind myself they are a PTSD symptom and will pass and in the interim I need to take a deep breath, refocus on the task at hand and do me best.

Also, at my age, I have to remind myself I have had them a very long time and that they are not new or a sign of Parkinson's :)

The link you have provided is very helpful. I can relate to what you say in that thread about feeling cold and a few other things that are mentioned.

My trauma I've had for 11 years only way I've kind of blocked it is with alcohol I know its not the way to go about helping the issue.

I'm currently waiting for an appointment to see a therapist I found it in myself to get help so I was referred by my doctor.

Thanks for the comments Ted, at this moment in time my stress load is quite bad my partner left me a few weeks back around the anniversary of when my incident happened that cause me to have ptsd.

Think I need to try relax a bit.

I have it too. Really annoys the hell out of me. People think I am just nervous, luckily.
