I flew MEDEVAC and loved the old CH-46's... the volkswagen of amphibious ops... the first time I flew in a CH-53 I was leaning over a patient and felt what seemed like a red hot needle in between my shoulder blades... I was frantically patting back there to see what was causing it, the crew chief was laughing at me and said "that's hydraulic fluid, if it wasn't leaking it we would be in trouble" I had the last laugh when the patient started turning a nice shade of blue and we had to settle in about 20 feet above the waves... the spray kept us soaking wet, it was a 3 hr flight... I loved the look on the crew chief's face when we would have to go up a bit due to waves and the patient would turn a nice blueberry color... I kept thinking to myself, "that's a good thing, if he didn't turn blue like that he would be dead" but never said it...
I see the C-130's almost every day flying into what used to be Ellington Air Field... it's half rented out by NASA now so a parts depot for the space station... it brings back the memories of flying a patient into an USAF base and all of them lined up... C-130. AC-130 etc...
